Katara hadn't eaten in five days.

Being in and out of surgery for her now slowly receding illness she'd been on fluids only.

At the moment Aang was sitting by her bed, a bag of boiled sweets opened surreptitiously on his lap – he hadn't been eating much either, for Katara's sake – quietly sneaking one every time Katara glanced away, so as not to upset her.

"Those smell so good," she said suddenly, her blue eyes focusing back on him and her hand squeezing his; he raised his eyebrows in surprise.

"You can smell them?"

"I haven't eaten. I can smell everything." She sighed, "And those smell great. That chicken you had yesterday did too."

"I thought you were asleep!"

"Dozing," she replied nonchalantly, smiling wearily, her eyes closing for a second against the never-ending tiredness. Aang rubbed her hand worriedly.

"You ok?"

"Yeah," she said, opening her eyes again, "Yeah, I'm fine. I just wish I could have one of those."

Aang looked down at the packet in his lap for a second, then he suddenly had an idea, and a devilish smile spread across his face. "What?" Katara asked, lifting her head a little; it was the most she could manage.

He popped a blackcurrant – Katara's favourite – into his mouth, sucked it for a second, then leaned over and kissed her with the sweet still in his mouth, the sugary taste running over his lips and onto hers. Carefully, making sure the sweet didn't slip, he opened his mouth on hers a little, and she poked her tongue out, savouring the sugary blackcurrant taste as much as she could before he pulled away.

"Good?" he asked, still leaning over her; the sweet was much reduced in size – she licked her lips with a slight smile then moved forward and kissed him again.

"Mmm," she whispered, "Very."

He chuckled then sat back, whilst Katara's eyes twinkled. "What?"

She gave him a look, then laughed, "You know what I want now?"

"What?"

"Curly fries."
