A/N: Just popped into my head. I'd write more explanation, but rookie blue is on is eight minutes and I need to get this posted!

Andy and Sam in the car during Big Nickel; all speculation. Very, very quick.

Hope you enjoy!

It's not so hard to do, really … in theory.

All either one of them has to do is open up their mouth and start talking. (Start talking about something of actual relevance and importance, that is; not talk about meaningless things like food, the scenery, etc., as they have been since the impromptu road-trip commenced.)

One of them just has to broach the giant elephant in the squad car that's threatening to take over and slowly suffocate them. It's growing larger and larger by the minute, and they both keenly feel its presence. They're both equally aware of how uncomfortable the other is, and how easy it would be to change that.

They're mature adults after all … they should be able to have a reasonable discussion about all the events that have transpired between them. (As in the sexual tension, the night that kind of wasn't but almost totally was, and the strain their professional relationship has had upon it ever since.) It's not like they're physically incapable of doing so.

But neither one is willing to be the one to bring it up. While both want desperately to say something about it, they won't dare to be the first to do so.

They're alike that way; they're both so freaking stubborn.

Plus they're both scared of what might happen, though neither one would ever admit it. They're scared that the other won't want to talk about it; that it will only make things more uncomfortable in the small space they're confined to; scared that by bringing it up, they'll somehow manage to destroy their playful dynamic more than it already has been.

And both too blind to see that that's exactly what they're accomplishing by keeping their mouths shut.

One of them will snap eventually, though; they can't both hold it in forever.

Oh yes, one of them will break sooner or later … it's all just a vicious waiting game.

Though at the rate it's been going, it is most certainly bound to be later, as opposed to sooner.

They're too stubborn for it to be any other way.
