They weren't purposely hiding their engagement.
A string of events just so happened to occur that kept Kurt and Jane from actually formally announcing it to their friends.
Kurt proposes with his mother's ring originally. It's a small diamond in a plain setting, but Kurt had kept it when his mother gave it to him, a wistful, "I'll never meet her, but I want her to know that I approve," accompanying the weight of the ring as it was pressed into his hand.
Jane beams when he presents it her, both of them bloody and bruised. She doesn't answer right away, forcing Kurt to raise his eyebrows and ask, "Jane? I kind of need an answer here."
"Of course, of course! Yes, it's a yes!" Jane laughs, wincing as her bruised face contorts.
Kurt slips the ring on her finger and it slips right off.
"Oops," he shrugs, scooping the bauble off of the floor. "Guess my mom's fingers were bigger than yours."
They bring it to a jewlers on 57th street and are told the gold is too fragile to be resized. Jane handles the ring carefully.
"Can we make it a pendant or something? The ring will never fit me and I don't want to get rid of it."
Kurt's mother's ring is made into a pendant and Jane wears it every day, right alongside Taylor Shaw's necklace.
But they're still out an engagement ring.
So they decide to hold off on telling everyone until they find a ring, since Sarah and Tasha and Patterson are all going to demand to see one.
But between Kurt's job as Assistant Director and Jane's as a field agent, ring shopping falls down the list of priorities until it's been three months since Kurt proposed and no one on the team knows anything.
Finally the non-secret comes out when Jane's clobbered on the head with a 2x4 and has to be taken for X-rays and CAT scans and stitches and god knows what else.
Tasha and Reade are hanging out in the waiting room while Jane is checked out. Kurt and Patterson run into the ER just minutes after Jane is admitted.
"What happened?" Patterson exclaims, worry for her team compounded after Mayfair, after Orion, after Daylight.
"She's conscious," Tasha reassures them quickly.
"But they won't tell us anything since we're not family," Reade says.
Kurt, forehead creased in worry, scoffs, "They'll tell me."
He rushes forward to the nurses' desk, leaving Reade rolling his eyes.
"I think all that power's gone to his head."
"He is her boyfriend," Patterson shrugs. "I think that counts."
Suddenly, Kurt's voice rises above the general din of the room.
"Of course you're going to tell me where Jane is. She's my fiancée!"
Tasha, Reade, and Patterson share a look. Did he say *fiancée*? What?
A nurse relents and Kurt disappears behind a set of sliding doors, leaving the surprised team in a huddle.
Two hours later, Jane is stable, awake, and only slightly grumpy from the hit to the head and the pain pills.
The team, plus Sarah and Sawyer, file into her room. Sarah'd been called and updated, both on Jane's medical status and relationship status, and then she had insisted on coming down to the hospital.
"Hi," Jane waves weakly, Kurt perched on the edge of her bed, suit jacket and tie long ago discarded.
They don't mean to bombard her, they really don't. But, best laid plans...
"You're engaged?"
"What the hell, Kurt?"
"We're you ever going to tell us?"
"Jane! I thought we were friends?"
Jane and Kurt make simultaneous guilty faces. Jane chews on the inside of her cheek and Kurt winces.
They share a look and then turn apologetic eyes on their friends and family. Jane smiles sheepishly.
"Oops."
A/N: It's short, possibly out of character, and a little dumb, but I liked writing it! The Jeller fandom could use some light fics too lol.
Let me know what you think :)
