Chapter 1: Quiet Night In The Woods

"There is something outside."

"What?" The concern in Captain Ulrich Jeremiah is evident in his voice; he and three other insurrectionists have been running away from ONI for weeks now. They hold valuable Intel regarding the Spartan IV project. If they manage to make it back to a rebel base and decrypt the information that the hard drives contains they will have an upper hand against the UNSC's newest Spartans.

"I said that there is something outside."

Captain Jeremiah stands up from the cold hard wood floor, assault rifle in hand; he takes a peek out the window opening the blinds just enough for him to scan the outdoors for a minute.

"The only thing I see outside is the carcass of the moa we were feasting on earlier, if there was truly something else out there the motion sensors we placed earlier would have gone off." He closes the blinds fully and sits down with his back against a wall; he puts MA5B on the ground next to his helmet. He looks to the right of him and sees his newest recruit nervous whispering to himself. The captain places his hand on his shoulder as if comforting him, "Everything alright there partner? You look a bit pale."

The recruit shakes his head startled by the Captain's sudden grip on his shoulder, "I don't like it here boss" he says with a shaky voice, "we are in the middle of the woods inside a tiny cabin surrounded by trees. We have old, outdated weapons and we are running considerably low on ammo. I think we just set ourselves up for an ambush."

"We managed to get this far Ramos. Luck is on our side. Please try not to jinx us."

"Well there is plenty of wood around us captain, feel free to knock on whatever piece looks more appealing to you."

It's so cold you can see your breath in front of you. The other two rebels are fast asleep; it's almost their turn to keep fire watch. "Just a few more hours." Ramos whispers to himself as he picks up his data pad. He starts checking on motion sensors, all but one show green across the board. "Captain?" he says, "We might have a malfunctioning motion sensor…" Ramos gives his data pad to the captain. He inspects it, moving and swiping his long finger across the screen. A series of red LED lights flash and the data pad starts to vibrate. "It appears that only one motion sensor is malfunctioning, Ramos, take a peek out the window it's the motion sensor directly outside." Ramos stands us from the floor, he opens the blinds just enough to see through and scans the area. "There is nothing outside cap—"

There is a loud sound followed by the shattering of glass. Ramos' body falls on the floor, a hole through his left eye gushes out with blood. He is dead, a perfect headshot. The other two rebels wake up and rush to their weapons when a sudden loud bang is heard. The door opens and 2 ODSTs breach and clear the room killing the two rebels and immobilizing the captain. One of the ODSTs places a brown sack over the captain's head while the second ODST restrains him.

"Delta seven-one to pelican 1-738, package is secured and neutralized, we need immediate evac on our location. How copy?"

A third ODST runs inside the cabin closing the door behind him, "Sergeant, we have company. Drones just picked up an insurrectionist convoy approaching our location 2 klicks south, 20 plus foot mobiles, 2 warthogs and 3 other vehicles."

"Get ready for a fight Private."
