Mother Nature's Demon

"Who would have thought that something as beautiful as snow could also be a deadly killer?" Joey argued out loud as he wandered through the obsolete city.

He glanced sideways to the left and right at the tall outdoor mini shops and stores of 8th Street. Not even a soul was seen through the blankets of white snow. His blond hair seemed to reflect off the snow's glimmer as he trudged down the empty road. His plain midnight blue jeans and black coat with grey sneakers were clearly seen within a fifty foot radius from where he shuffled. The young male hugged himself from the cold to keep in the body heat that he felt was escaping. With tinged cheeks and a cinnamon nose, the eighteen-year-old kept his head up as he ambled down the bright chalky town. The sidewalk he was using had no footprints besides making the ones he owned and left behind. The sky suffused a fiery glow from the approaching sunset. He held a single crimson rose in his left hand while marching down the pathway.

His honey-due eyes scanned over the sidewalk as he came across an intersection of a 4-way stop. He could have turned away by now, but didn't want the haunting memories filling his brain. Joey mentally cried out as he caught glance of a car to his right that couldn't stop descending down the street. What seemed like a male driver and blond female passenger, he became completely terrified when he saw who was in the backseat. It was himself. The tiny car glazed down the street of slick ice and new fallen snow with no sign of stopping. The family appeared helpless after realizing they were heading straight for the lamppost ahead. No one was around to help the lost spirits that would be killed in Mother Nature's deadly fiend: snow.

The blond watched in horror as the collision echoed off the base of his cranium and the city's hollow buildings. While fire and ice mixed for a mere moment in time, he stared vulnerable at the smashed vehicle. The screams and crackling noises from the car went unheard, but became stained inside Joey's mind. He let his breath go after realizing he'd been holding it for a few seconds. Two words escaped his slightly parted ruby lips in a whisper, "Mom . . . Dad . . ."

A snowflake landed on the blonde's eyelash before he blinked, melting the snowflake, and ghastly scene away. The car vanished. The whole crash dispersed into thin air.

It was his past to never look back on. It was time to forget everything and finally move on into the present and future. Joey took a step into the snow towards the same lamppost his parents had crashed into this day as the anniversary from the year before. It was a miracle that he survived such an incident. December for him was going to be lonely this year.

More snowflakes fell, illuminating his frosted silhouette.

Hesitating, he took another step into the shimmering and empty road while still gripping the one and only blood-red rose in his left hand. Never again would he think of snow as a get away vacation from school when it reached five feet tall. Never again would he look at snow as a playful toy for sledding and snowball fights with his friends. Never again was his answer. He had decided snow was the demon of Mother Nature's featherless angel.

And yet, it was peaceful when the solitary figure wavered towards his parent's gravesite with the single rose still in sight.
