Prologue

It was exactly four-hundred years ago when I last saw her.

She was only a little girl. Small, reckless, and full of adventure.

The first time I met her was in the forest near my shrine. I was out for a morning walk when I sensed her in the bushes. She was a creature completely new to my virgin eyes. The only things I knew that had souls were the forces of nature, being that I was young and isolated from the world. Responding to the unnatural hormones pulsing from her body, I became extremely agitated and started toward her.

As I approached her, I was cautious of her physical appearance and her reaction towards me. I tensed in surprise as she was sitting on a patch of grass, completely bare except her thin layer of white clothing covering her lower area. I studied her as I would with a newborn fawn, and her features did not seem to be all that different from my own. She had dark brown fur covering her head and she had eyes as hazel as honey tea. Her face was small and a little plump, but a sizable portion so that it balanced out with the rest of her small form. She did not have horns, long ears, or sharp teeth like myself. She was also amazingly beautiful, but something about her was so pure, I did not dare touch her.

"What are you, beautiful creature?" I snapped at her, but she did not seem to flinch.

"My name is Yukiji!" She announced with a gaping smile; her teeth were tiny white stubbles and there was no sharpness to them. "What's your name?"

"My name?" I answered questioningly. No one had ever asked of my name in years, and I almost stumbled upon the question. "It's Akura-ou."

"Nice to meet you, Akura-ou!"

We played together, day after day, and I was able to get use to Yukiji's high pitched voice and annoying laughter. She told me that creatures like her were called humans. She showed me the wonders of her village from high above a cherry blossom tree so I wouldn't have to interact with them. She was nice, kind, and generous -always bringing me red-bean-filled mochi each time she came to visit.

We also sat together on a big rock we called "Sakura No Ishi", or 'The Rock of Cherry Blossoms" because the area that surrounded it was full of cherry trees, and whenever it was time for their passing, the petals would gracefully drift down, swirling and dancing in the wind.

But she started growing older.

As she was maturing, she became more beautiful, and I quickly fell in love.

Then she met a fox demon named Tomoe and she revealed to me that her heart belonged to him. I was jealous and attacked Tomoe, thus leading to the burning of her sacred village and the death of her family.

Then, she suddenly disappeared. I knew it was because of my foolish actions, but it was too late to apologize. Even if I dared to find her and apologize, my apologies would not sum up to the amount of damage I had done to her heart.

I isolated myself from the world after the devastating occurrence. I could not bare to look at the burnt rubble and ash without thinking about the idiotic actions I took to make that happen.

Years passed, maybe hundreds of years -I did not know. But I knew Yukiji was no longer walking on this planet anymore, because I learned from her that every day humans slowly die; they can not live forever.

I did not care.

I would not dare care.

But I did, and that made it even worse.
