A/N.
i have ideas sometimes. i also like Mephisto a lot. and DGM has gorgeous top hats. i don't know. this is short. i want to do character studies and write other things why does this happen to me.

There once was a man with a hat. It was a top hat, stark white with pink and purple additions. The man with the hat had lived a long life, and had gained names such as the Trickster or Loki.

But rewind the clock just a tad.

There once was a mat with a hat. It was a top hat, patched up colorfully in odd places and with fun additions.

At one point, the man with the hat became two. In the seven thousand years of his existence, this was the only time that the man arguable disappeared. After all, being as powerful as the man with hat was, one eventually became lonely.

And so the man with the hat was now two children. They were raised as twins by a loving mother figure in a beautiful field of wheat, where they could run, play and watch the gorgeous sunset to their hearts content.

The man with the hat had a mission, a destiny if you will. And eventually that destiny caught up to the two brothers, and tragic events being what they are, one died while the other was gone with the wind.

The one that died had a plan, a plan that would take thiry-five years to come to fruition. And at the end of those thirty-five years, the world he would awaken to would not be a kind one.

But rewind the clock just a tad.

There once was a man with a hat. He was sometimes a clown, and he tended to pick up strays, usually dogs, but once he picked up a young boy. He reminded him of someone from his past, who he was unsure, but he was cute and adorable and needed help so the man with the hat gave it to him.

But push forth the clock just a tad.

There once was a man with a hat. It was a top hat, patched up colorfully in odd places and with fun additions. He made it his business to offer greed to humans, and watched them take it, and then be killed for it, all quite joyfully, as this was his mission in life.

But push forth the clock just a tad.

There once was a man with a hat. It was a top hat, stark white with pink and purple additions. He made friends with a human after years of simply playing them as pawns. And though he hated to admit it, he knew at his very core, that his friend was also, at the end of the day, naught but a pawn.

And when the full story unfolded and his friend was possessed and died, the man with the hat mourned for just a bit, stopped time just the once, as had been done in the past with the mourning of other family, from another lifetime, before continuing to once more devote himself to his schemes.

But rewind the clock just a tad.

There once was a man with a hat. It was a top hat, patched up colorfully in odd places and with fun additions. His war had finally ended, he was once again one, but he was no victor. His family was destroyed, as both sides were family to both parts of him and he was, once more, alone. Alone and contemplating what to do, now that the mission given to both sides of him was over.

"Would you like a family again?" a voice, dark and unwelcoming and terrifying.

And the man with the hat thought about it.

"Yes, but I would like to keep my hat,"

But push forth the clock just a tad.

There once was a man with a hat. It was a top hat, stark white with pink and purple additions. And as he watched the pair of brothers running around in circles trying to save both each other and the world of Assiah, as he watched his new siblings squabble amongst each other and with the newest addition to their family, he felt a vague sense of nostalgia, a sense of camaraderie, for just a second.

Then he put on his hat, and he was back, as ever, to his schemes.
