'And where would it take me?'
'On,' Dumbledore simply said.
Silence again.
'Then I will go,' Harry said. 'On, I mean.'
Dumbledore looked confused. 'Why?'
'Because, there is only one left. And Voldemort of course. I don't really want Death to feel cheated by me again. Goodness knows, Fate already hates me, and I really don't need another deity to hate me.'
'Harry, my boy, by returning, you may ensure that fewer souls are maimed, fewer families are torn apart-' Dumbledore said desperately.
'But what about my soul, Dumbledore? What about mine, and Hermione's, and Ron's, and Ginny's? What about Neville's and Luna's, and even, for Merlin's sakes, Malfoy's? What about everyone else's? Everyone who fought for your precious light? You think that Voldemort could be finished now? I don't. And I want, for just one second, to be like everyone else. To die when that killing curse hits me. I don't know if this is selfishness, and Ginny, and Ron, and Hermione may still be out there, but for how long? If this is what it takes to give them happiness, without me, then so be it. Because I am not afraid to die, Headmaster. I am afraid to live,' Harry said.
'My dear boy-'
'It's my time, I can feel it.' And, like his ancestor many years before, he went and greeted Death as an old friend.
James, Lily and Sirius stepped out of the mist.
'I do not understand,' Albus said, putting his head in his hands. 'I was so sure he would go back.'
'You overestimated him one too many times Albus. I cannot say that I am pleased with his choice, but he has almost died, excepted death one too many times, I think. And so he did die, inside, a little, until now there was nothing left, and he could finally end it, on his own terms.' James said.
'He was a remarkable boy,' Sirius said sadly, 'And I can only hope that the others understand it.'
Lily remained silent.
Far below, the fighters of Hogwarts cared to their wounded, until Voldemort and his Death Eaters arrived. Only, Harry did not hear them scream his name, he was oblivious to all. Except his parents.
