A loud clap of thunder woke Al from an otherwise deep sleep. He immediately sat up, looking at the window. Through the curtain, there was a bright flash of lightning, and more thunder rumbled across the sky. Al looked over at Ed, who was sleeping like a rock on the other bed. "Brother?" Al whispered. "Brother, wake up..."
No response. Ed kept sleeping.
Another flash of lightning and clap of thunder made Al scream. He leapt out of his bed and ran to his mother's room, starting to cry. "Mommy!"
Trisha, awakened by Al's screaming, sat up in her bed. She watched as Al jumped onto the bed and tried to burrow underneath her blanket. "Al?" she asked, lifting the blanket. "What's wrong?"
Al trembled beneath the blanket. "Th-the thunder and lightning," he stammered. He looked at Trisha. "It's scary, Mommy. It woke me up."
"It's okay, sweetie. It can't hurt you." Trisha held out her arms, smiling gently. "You don't have to be scared."
With a quiet whimper, Al crawled into his mother's arms, and Trisha pulled him into a hug. She hummed softly, murmuring, "You're safe, I promise. I won't let anything happen to you. You're okay."
Al looked up at Trisha. "Thanks, Mommy," he said, sniffling. He snuggled closer to her, his breathing gradually slowing until he was almost asleep.
"You're welcome, sweetie," Trisha said softly. She kissed the top of Al's head. "I love you."
