Disclaimer: I do not own Yuu Yuu Hakusho nor do I make any money from this piece of fan fiction.
Warnings: Depressing fic ahead. This fic is best read through depressingly chilly blue tinted glasses. Pairing should be obvious.
AN: This is probably the shortest song fic I will ever write, as the text portion itself is a scant 300 words. Wholly inspired by listening to KOKIA's chillingly beautiful "Ave Maria", and the crystal clear Midwest night scenery I was treated to while driving back to Midway International Airport in Chicago so I can make it home in time for my classes on Monday. I highly suggest reading this fic in time with the song. Due to the lack of lyrics in the song (beyond "Ave Maria" repeated), I have opted to use timestamps instead to indicate when each part should be read to keep it in sync with the song. If you choose to look for the song online, try to find the CD version, not the live version, as the timestamps will be wrong. The song should be about 4:13 in length.
Frozen Solitude
(0:00)
She never thought she would return.
(0:27)
Or that she would miss this place, filled with rigid prejudices and frozen hearts.
(0:53)
But now, staring out from the top of the tallest tower, with the twin moons of the Makai in their fullest ivory glory, illuminating the deep purple night sky, she recalls the happy memories from her short life.
(1:19)
His awkward courtship. Her early misunderstanding. The embarrassing group explanation. Their marriage. Their first night together.
(1:39)
A frozen wind blows, reminding her of the present.
(1:45)
The Koorime Elders, declared she had been "defiled" of her purity, placed her here. The Tower of Solace, they called it. The tower was little more than a frozen spiral staircase to the heavens. It was as though they knew the very thing she sought.
(2:11)
For while she was born a Koorime, he was born a human. And while she had been blessed with near eternal life, he had not. For when Fate and Love work together, blessings become curses. Happiness becomes sorrow. She was destined to outlive him the moment they met. Their happily ever after was never meant to be for eternity.
(2:37)
She had wanted to join him, to go with him. She had wanted to cry, to scream, to storm into Koenma's office at the unfairness of it all. She had wanted to change their fate.
(3:00)
He would not let her.
(3:03)
And as she looked at the world beneath her, she wonders what it would feel like to fall, to crash through the branches under her, to hit the hard frozen earth below. To feel that brief moment of total freedom, like the birds she used to feed, a world away. No, a lifetime away.
(3:52)
And as she feels the harsh wind whip at her face, she wonders if he could ever forgive her.
