Name: Ulterior Motives
Author: Genji
Warnings: None...off the cuff, weirdness I suppose and use of Latin names, words and places (they're not important, just a sign that I've spent too much time hunched over my Latin book)
Disclaimer: I don't claim to own anything. Not even the clothes on my back.
Notes: This is from one of Relena's groupie's POV. I didn't exactly chose one, but I decided that they needed an excuse for their actions ('Space is brighter because she's there'? I mean come on! There must be a reason why they are so lovey dovey on the naïve ruler of the world...ok, well in the beginning she was more naïve than toward the end, but still....) Also, this one bit me late at night...so I could only obey.
Comments: Good, Bad, Flames...send 'em on over.
Augustine Constantine Vespasian is my full name, but no one ever bothers to ask. Just another face in the crowd. My kin are one of those small royal families with a drop of royal blood and a drop of land to go with it. How we're related to anything royal is beyond me.
My name? That was mother's idea, social climber that she is. It was her idea that I should be sent to this school in the Sanq Kingdom, or so I let her think. It's most likely draining my nation's resources as we speak, but it shall all be restored in time. Therefore, under Daddy's urging I have resolved to get the most out of my education here before I return to my kingdom, Turbata Turris, I mean Nicomedia. Once again, I can only frown at the name and be thankful that one of these days I'll be able to change it. There's no law against it, right?
As for my association with Relena, well, I admire her ideals. I'm tired of war. In my nation there has always been some war going on. Mostly civil. The people want a republic, ignoring the fact that every single one has collapsed, or lies in shambles, waiting for someone strong enough to pick up the pieces.
How many times have I awoken to the sound of an angry mob, armed with pitchforks and torches, banging at our door? It's gotten to the point where Daddy's had to start pouring scalding water down onto them. He keeps on saying that next time it will be boiling oil. But he loves the people, he really does. In fact, he wants to give them more land. To do that, he married my brother, Nero, off to Caligula of Socordia, the neighboring kingdom, right next to ours. Unfortunately, Caligula's guard, the Praetorain, I believe, murdered my sister-in-law rather recently. Of course, the two weren't married long enough to have any children. Nero wanted to return home and this left Socordia without a ruler. Daddy, the good man that he is, offered to combine the two crowns. The people there wanted a republic as well, but Daddy knows how to deal with things like that-- with scalding water. While the foolish people were devising election ballots, something about hanging chads, I don't quite understand them, Daddy slipped in and the two kingdoms were joined. This new realm, called Nicomedia, happens to be next to the Sanq Kingdom. The Sanq Kingdom is a wealthy tract of land, with a queen and no eligible relatives. It's perfect. That's the real reason I'm here. As long as Relena lives, I will be her companion, I'll find my way to her heart, and perhaps mention something about an heir. Me, of course. She's going to die anyway. You can't preach such radical issues and expect to live long.
As soon as she is out of the way, Daddy will appear, and on behalf of his bereaved daughter, the late queen's best friend, the Sanq Kingdom shall pass into the hands of the Vespasians. Relena's principals on disarmament will be followed to the letter to prevent any such civil war.
Of course, all pitchforks must be turned over to the state.
