I don't own anything you recognise as Stephenie Meyer's :D
Chapter 1: Oblivion
"Bella? Can you hear me?"
The strange man leaning in my face clicked his fingers and shone a pen light briefly in my eyes.
I stared blankly at his bright blue eyes, not even flinching from the light.
Who was this man and why was he clicking at me? I continued to stare at him. There was nothing about him that was familiar. He had pale blonde hair almost the same shade as Carlisle's, although he was nowhere near as good looking as Dr. Cullen. This man was clearly a doctor as well; the white coat and stethoscope gave that away. Why was I in the hospital? Where was Edward?
Dimly, I became aware of my surroundings, without ever once shifting my gaze. The room was small and painted a pale green. The linoleum was a slightly darker green with black flecks running through each tile. There was a single barred window with a radiator beneath it to the left of the wrought iron bed in the centre of the room. It was on this bed that I was sitting with its scratchy woolen blanket. I was dressed in a thin white nightgown that had Phoenix State General Hospital Linen Service emblazoned across it. Beyond the man's head was a heavy door with a window in the centre of it. The door was also painted green to match the walls.
The strange man tried again.
"Isabella? Bella?"
I blinked. The man made a note on the clipboard he was holding, checked his watch, stood and left the room, closing and locking the door behind him with a sharp snap. I could hear him talking to some people beyond the door.
"She's unresponsive today" he said.
"I don't know how much longer I can take this" a man's voice replied.
Dad.
Through the layers of numbness I recognized that voice.
"Dad?" I whispered through cracked lips, my voice barely audible.
"Charlie, we'll get through this" a woman's voice said.
Mom?
What was going on? Where was Edward? Why was I here?
A tear ran down my cheek as I slid down on the narrow cot until I was laying flat. Closing my eyes, I slipped back into oblivion.
"Bella!"
I turned.
Jacob Black sat in the parking lot of Forks High on a shiny black motorcycle. The students that were standing nearby turned to look at him, a few of the girls looked him up and down appreciatively. He had filled out nicely and was looking more and more like a man everyday instead of the sixteen year old he was.
Beside me Edward growled. I smacked him in the ribs, knowing he wouldn't feel it anyway and hushed him.
"Jacob!" I ran toward him and he enveloped me in a big bear hug. I pulled away when I started to lose air from the tightness of his grip.
"What are you doing here Jake? You'll get booted out again"
"He came to deliver a message, consider it received" Edward said.
"What message?" I demanded.
"Didn't he tell you his big brother crossed the line on Saturday night?" Jake accused.
Beside me Edward snarled.
"It was no-mans land!"
"Was not!" Jacob shot back.
"What happened? Why were they fighting?" I asked.
"No one was fighting. Don't stress over it Bella" Edward soothed me.
"You didn't tell her anything did you? Is that why you took her away?"
"Drop it Jacob" Edward snarled.
"Why did you take me to Florida…?" I trailed off suddenly seeing the bigger picture.
"Victoria…" I squeaked. "She came back for me"
I rounded on Edward.
"You lied to me!"
"Bella, I – "
I turned and climbed on Jacob's motorcycle, pulling the spare helmet over my head.
"We'll talk about this later Edward" I said to him as Jacob roared the engine to life and we sped away to La Push.
