Blue Storms
The night air surrounded them and it was as if they were being drowned in an aura of mystique the grass befriending their palms and the taste of beer settling like discourse on their tongues. The evening had rolled by as quickly as cigarette smoke leaving them in the haze of blue. With a deep breath Sara turned to face Greg with pursed lips all of the questions in her mind hovering in the atmosphere like clouds.
"What if things had been different?"
Words; alone they did not make any sense but with the matching thoughts that were filling her mind they meant so much. He turned to face her- his brown eyes gleaming with wonderment and retrospect captivating her in ways she wished she could change.
"We wouldn't be the same people"
It was a fair point. It was a point she had not considered.
"What if we were happier?"
Happiness had always seemed like such an odd measure to them both. The question left them both puzzling over how altered their lives would have really been had they made different decisions.
"I don't know"
Greg replied honestly watching as Sara observed the skies above them with a critical gaze. There were storms circling in her mind that much was obvious. He waited for them to break- for all of those words to come pouring out.
"What if you realise you fell in love with the wrong person?"
One question; it shattered everything. The facade by which they had lived had melted into simple shadows upon the ground. And she didn't stop. Another question formed on her lips and before she had a chance to bite it back.
"What if we'd fallen in love?"
And like rainfall Greg said the only thing that seemed to naturally follow as he met Sara's stormy eyes.
"I fell in love with you years ago"
It was the honesty in his gaze that stopped her heart in her chest, her breathing catching in her throat as she formed her response.
"...What if I told you I was in love with you now?"
He considered the question before replying.
"I'd promise that things would be different...that we'd be happier..."
With deep breath she said the thoughts that had been haunting her.
"I think I'm love with you"
Greg didn't say a word leaning towards her bringing his lips to meet Sara's whispering secrets to her as they kissed. Their hands crept closer together across the grass the fingertips brushing sending electric shocks through their bodies. Their tongues touched with caution as they melted into each other.
"...What if I never wanted this to stop?" Sara whispered to him her brushing a hand across his cheek thinking of how falling out of love had been as earth shattering and sudden. She had caught her husband's eye and felt a sense of emptiness slowly consume her.
"Then I'd promise I'd never let go you..." Greg muttered back pulling her into his arms holding her against his heartbeat.
"What if I asked you to make love to me?"
His glistening gaze met hers and gentle caresses of her hand resounded through his body as shivers swam down his spine.
They silently tangled together beneath the moon light a collision of forces as the atmosphere settled into stillness surrounding them with swallow warmth.
Not a word was exchanged.
Not a word was needed.
The End
