"Beck..."
"Becca…"
"Rebecca!" I jolted awake, disoriented.
"I thought you were never gonna wake up." My twelve year old brother Ben stated his messy brown hair sticking up at all angles. I sighed before glancing out the window only to see a never-ending wall of green on the other side. We had been in the car for hours and San Diego never felt so far away.
"Are we there yet?" Ben whined.
I glanced to the figure in the front seat, my mother. One hand rested on the steering wheel lazily while the other was clutched around her triple shot espresso.
"Almost" she replied.
She had been saying that for the last 6 hours. I let my head thump back against the fogged window and continued to watch the sea of green.
"Hey Beck wanna watch a movie?" I mumbled a "no" before going back to my thoughts.
I just didn't understand why my mother felt the need to drag me out here to the middle of nowhere! So much for the best summer of my life. I was supposed to be hanging out with my friends, going to parties on the beach, sneaking sips of beer but instead I was going to spend my summer vacation in my mother's hometown. Forks, WA. The tiniest, most boring town in the whole Pacific Northwest.
"Look, the ocean!" Ben cried.
I sighed "Please let me survive this summer" I whispered to myself.
After what felt like an eternity more of driving through gravel back roads and mud we pulled up to an old wooden house along the ocean. *************************************************************************************
"We're here!" My mother crooned as she hopped from the drivers seat with a little too much enthusiasm.
She breathed in deeply before letting a smile overtake her tired features "Smells like home."
I rolled my eyes. Really? All I smelled was a shitty summer.
"Sarah!" I turned to see my Grandpa hobbling towards us.
My Grandpa quickly enveloped my mother in a hug before turning to Ben and I. Even if I hated forks I adored my Grandpa with every bone in my body. He had soft brown eyes and laugh lines and he always smelled like the forest.
"Look at both of you so grown up! Ben I could swear you've grown at least a foot and Rebecca you get more and more beautiful every time I see you."
I smiled. Did I mention I adore my Grandpa?
"Well let's not catch a cold from standing in the rain lets go inside and get some grub." Mom and Grandpa began making their way to the house chatting happily with Ben skipping along in front.
Having no choice but to drag my feet and follow along behind. This summer was going to royally blow chunks! Just as I was about to let out yet another large sigh to alert the world with my unhappiness something streaked past my peripheral vision.
I stood stiff as a board glancing left and right unable to deny the feeling I was being watched. I quickly let a shiver rack my body before running to catch up with my family not glancing back even once.
