She remembered the words her mother had spoken. She clung to those words like life lines, beloved sanctuary in the floating blackness of her existance. She was alone, alone in the dark, forever. she sometimes would suddenly be on the other side of the room, and not remember how she got there. she would suddenly have food, like it appeared out of nowhere. she had a companion for a while, but he left a long time ago. she sat shivering in the corner of her room, she could feel an empty space in her head, where a memory should be. She cowered as her door opened, and she forced herself to look at it. She would remember this time. She concentrated on her mother's words.
"I wish I could tell you that you'll be loved. That you'll be safe and cared for and protected. But this isn't the time for lies. What you are going to be, Melody, is very very brave."
And for once she was. She was brave. She looked at it, imprinting its image in her mind. She would not forget. It turned and walked out, and she realized that she still remembered it.
"Thank you mummy." She whispered. Because from now on she would be brave. From now on she wouldn't be scared, because she remembered. And she would NEVER forget.
