She watched him carefully. Perhaps the Kings and Queens would have been easier to read or even Ardon and Alithia or any of the other veterans of the battle. But, she wanted to see his reaction. Those who did not know him would not see anything different though perhaps they might think him more fearsome and stern than usual. But anyone who knew him well enough (and she liked to think that she knew him best of all) could see the remembered sorrow in his dark eyes and how a long-carried guilt was what carved his angular features into stern, unapproachable lines.
Slipping her hand into his, she pressed close to him. "How long has it been?"
"Ten years ago today." They walked closer to the newly unveiled monument. It was a pristine marble oval set atop twenty columns. A relief of all the Narnians who fell in battle covered both sides of the oval and their names were carved into each of the four sides of the columns. "I was the one who called on many of them, urged them to leave what little safety there was and focus on building up the army." He set one broad hand against a column full of Centaur names. Pointing to five names, he gruffly said, "They would not have fallen if I had been able to stop Jadis." He pointed a set of ten. "Nor them and there are many more I could name."
She squeezed his hand and he finally looked down at her. "Just because you're the General, it doesn't mean that every death is yours to claim responsibility for…is that not something you have taught the Kings?"
He looked at her in silence for several long moments then stated too softly for anyone else to hear, "This is different, Alambiel."
"No. It's not. These people knew what they were fighting for and you may have gathered and helped lead them into the battle, but they fought for their families, Narnia, and Aslan. They died so that others might live and enjoy the freedom they helped to win here at Beruna. And so long as we remember what they did and why they died, their sacrifice will never be in vain. Remembering them is the greatest honor we can give them."
It took several moments but then there was an easing of the sorrow and the guilt in his face. Raising her hand, Oreius pressed a kiss to her fingers. Then he guided her hand to rest on the crook of his elbow. "Wise words, Wife. And we will remember." They walked together to observe the rest of the monument to those who fell that fateful day at Beruna ten years beforehand.
