Chapter 1: A Deep Yearning

The two princesses sat beside each other on their thrones. Celestia's kind eyes looked around the room, smiling at the ponies that passed by with flowers and decorations. The warm air of spring flowed through the open windows, blowing Celestia's mane. Luna sat quietly, watching the ponies, not smiling. Celestia's birthday ceremony was in a few days. Of course, the formal ceremony would be at mid-day, but the festivities began and ended at sunrise and sunset. They always happened like this, except for Luna's birthday celebrations. Luna's started at sundown and ended at sunrise. Half the ponies that went to Celestia's festival came to Luna's.
At lunch, Celestia smiled and laughed at the noble ponies while she ate something fancy. Luna smiled at the nobles, while she ate something fancy, but unlike Celestia's genuine smile, Luna's was false. A deep yearn churned in the darkest part of Luna's mind. A want so bad, it might change her forever. It might change Equestria forever.
