Tomes of Enchantment

Chapter-1

The Examination

Lucy hummed to herself as she picked up her hand bag and got ready to leave her apartment. The books she had picked up from the local library had to be returned that day. Despite the fact that Lucy loved to visit the library on a daily basis, she had been looking forward to spending a relaxing afternoon at home.

The library was only about five minutes away from her residence, so Lucy reached it in no time. She returned the books and made her way to the back of the library.

Since I'm here, I might as well get something to read, Lucy mused, running one hand through her golden hair while she browsed the bookshelves.

As she turned to make her way to the Science section, Lucy paused when a book on the floor a few feet away from her.

It seemed to be no ordinary book. It was a bright gold and there was a strange light that hung about it. Lucy made her way cautiously over to it and picked the book up gingerly. Slowly, she opened it and turned the pages.

The result was instantaneous. A bright light erupted from the book. Lucy opened her mouth to exclaim, but no words came out. Dropping the book, she lifted her hands to shield her face.

When Lucy opened her eyes, she was standing in what looked like a large classroom. Other people were sitting at desks and were answering questions on a sheet of paper.

"An examination hall?" Lucy asked aloud as she looked around. "What on earth is going on?"

Not knowing what to do, Lucy sat down at an empty desk and glanced at the other people, feeling lost. Almost instantly, one of the examiners came up to her and handed her a sheet.

Lucy took it and lay it on the desk as she studied the 'questions'. They really weren't questions, but just strange symbols-no, more like a different language all together. It was unlike anything that Lucy had seen before.

How am I supposed to answer this? The blonde wondered. I have no-

Lucy cut off her train of thought abruptly as the language suddenly began to make sense. Dots seemed to connect in her mind. Lucy automatically reached for a pen, but found a quill, instead. Raising an eyebrow, but deciding to shrug it off, Lucy dipped it in an ink bottle and began to write.

Her quill moved swiftly across the paper as if it were writing on its own. Lucy honestly had no idea why on earth she knew what exactly she was supposed to answer, but felt that finishing the exam was the only way to get some answers as to where she was and how she got there.

Time ticked by and before Lucy knew it, she finished answering. She lay the quill down, feeling stumped. What was she supposed to do now?

"What the-" To Lucy's surprise, the sheet disappeared in a flash of light along with the used quill and the almost-empty ink bottle. The desk disappeared as well. As Lucy stood, her mind whirling, her chair disappeared, too.

Just then, to her surprise, a short and very familiar old man approached Lucy.

"The head librarian?" Lucy asked aloud, confused. "Mr. Makarov? What exactly is this place?"

"Miss Lucy Heartfilia," Makarov spoke, a smile appearing on his face. Lucy froze in her spot. How on earth did this old man know her last name?

Makarov continued.

"Congratulations on passing the test."

Lucy stared at him and then-

"….huh?"
