SHADOW DAY, 1980

A Back to the Future Fanfic

Hill Valley Junior High School

Monday

November 3, 1980

"Settle down now, class!" Mrs. Simpson exclaimed to the class, holding an empty coffee tin in front of her. "As you all should know, next Monday is Shadow Day. In this container are slips of paper with the names of all the volunteers that you can "shadow" for the day. I will call up each of you alphabetically to randomly choose a slip."

Though for a young Marty McFly, this was the least of his concerns. "Hey, Adam" Marty whispered to a blond boy in the row next to him.

"Yeah?" Adam whispered back.

"I was wondering if you'd want to hang out on Saturday before you move."

"No talking!" Mrs. Simpson scolded. Adam got out a sheet of paper from a notebook and ripped off a small corner to write on. He handed the note to Marty.

I don't know. We'll probably be packing and stuff on Saturday but I'll let you know if I can.

Marty and Adam had been best friends since kindergarten. They would go over each other's houses after school and play on the same baseball team. In the summers, they would go about their small town of Hill Valley and prank unsuspecting people, often getting into trouble. But the good times they once knew were coming to an end. Adam was moving with his family to Ohio, leaving Marty behind in California. Marty wrote a response on the back of the note and attempted to pass it to Adam.

"Adam Manning?" Mrs. Simpson called out.

"Uh, I'm not going to be here" he replied nervously.

"What? Oh, that's right. You're moving. We're all going to miss you when you leave us, Adam." She said with an unusual tone of sweetness in her voice. And then she went back to her loud, almost threatening tone.

"Marty McFly?"

Slowly, he got out of his seat and approached the teacher's big wooden desk. He should have been more concerned about who he was going to shadow, but his mind was on losing his best friend. He picked a slip from the tin and started to make his way back to his desk.

"Douglas Needles?" Mrs. Simpson's voice trailed off in Marty's head. He sat down and opened the folded piece of paper.

"What'd ya get?" Adam asked in a hushed voice.

"I dunno. Some scientist named Dr. Emmett Brown…"
