Katerina jumped off of her mare and stared wide-eyed at the bodies laying on the ground before her. She gasped and tried to hold back from screaming.
"No." Was all she could manage to say. She ran into the house and covered her mouth. Her family had been killed. She couldn't hold it any longer. She fell to her knees and began to sob. "No! No! This is my fault!" She looked over to her mother's and father's dead bodies before grabbing her mother. "Mama! Mama! Mama, wake up!" She looked over to her father's lifeless body on the ground. "Papa! Papa no! I'm so sorry." Her voice was soon cut off by her sobs. Still on her knees, she put her hands over her face and sat there until she knew she had to go. She stood up, shaking, and wiped off the tears from her cheeks. It was no use though. Every time she wiped a tear away, it was replaced by a new one. She took one last glimpse at the horrible scene in front of her and whispered, "Goodbye. I love you. I'm so sorry." Without another word, she began to walk outside.
Katherine gasped and sat up in her bed. Her breathing was quick and uneven as she looked around the hotel room. She slowly began to calm down, trying to forget the dreadful memory that had just come back to her as she slept. "Oh calm the hell down." She said to herself. "Just a damn dream." She kicked the blankets off and spun her body around to the edge of the bed and rested her feet on the ground. She looked over at the clock, seeing it was only 4:30 in the morning. She groaned and stood up, walking slowly to the bathroom. She didn't bother turning the lights; she knew her eyes wouldn't be able to adjust fast enough. She looked in the mirror before turning the faucet on and splashing cold water in her face. Katherine walked back into the bedroom and quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and a jacket. She walked back in the bathroom for a few minutes to fix her hair and put on lipstick, and then she grabbed her cell phone and car keys and headed out the door. She took the stairs and ran with vampire speed down them. The hotel lobby was almost empty, but the streets outside were not. She opened the door and a cab pulled up to the sidewalk near her. She was about to wave them away, but then she realized it had been a full day since she'd last fed. She got in the back of the cab and compelled the driver to stay still as she extended her canines and dug her fangs into his neck. His blood was obviously tainted by drugs, but it would still satiate her. She then made him forget, and exited the cab again, looking around Times Square. "What to do, what to do..." Katherine murmured.
"Hello, Katerina." A voice from behind her came. Katherine froze. "Don't be scared, it is only me." Then she realized who it was.
"Elijah?" She slowly turned around, a grin spreading on her face. "By the way, it's Katherine now, remember?"
"Oh course I remember, Katerina. But in my mind, you will always be Katerina." He returned her smile with a warm one of his own. "How have you been? Is this where you've been hiding?"
"I wasn't hiding! Just getting away from Mystic Falls for a while." She studied him closely. "Besides, what's it matter to you?"
"Just catching up with the girl who taught me what love truly means." He smiled softly.
"That was a long time ago, Elijah. I was but a human then."
"The wisest human I had ever met." Katherine rolled her eyes. "Would you like to go get a drink? Perhaps a coffee?"
Katherine thought about it. "Will you tell me how you found me?"
"Of course. So are you in?" He extended his hand. Katherine looked down at his hand, took it, and smiled.
"Of course I'm in."
