The three of them

He opened the door gingerly and let her in. She walked in slowly without taking her eyes from the bundle in her arms. He dropped the bags he was carrying on the floor and followed her to the couch. She had sat down and was still enjoying her new favorite pastime, alright, their new favorite pastime. But no one could really blame them, she was a knock-out, the most gorgeous thing his eyes had ever had the privilege of admiring.

Her tiny fingers were clasped around her mother's finger. Her eyes were wide open and staring at the figures above her. Her mouth started to move as if she was nursing, a sign they had come to recognize as her being hungry. A breast suddenly appeared before her so she could latch on, which she did hungrily.

He was simply mesmerized by everything that had happened in the last few days. He watched intently the scene that was unfolding before him, some would call it normal, even mundane and ordinary. Yet to him, it was anything but. It was extraordinary, it was the most incredible thing he was witnessing. He finally understood the 'miracle of life'. A few years ago he would have thought calling something that had been happening over and over again for millenniums a miracle was a bit odd and ridiculous, dare he say. However, now, such miracle was in their living-room, wide awake and gorgeous. He wanted to pinch himself, in fear it was all a dream.

A year ago, she wouldn't talk to him, a year ago, she wouldn't give him the time of day, a year ago, she wasn't his anymore, a year ago, his future wasn't very bright. Now, though, now she was within reach. Now she was his wife and he was her husband, now she had given him more than he could have ever hoped for, now his future was as bright as could be.

Unconsciously, without having to communicate with words, they had fallen into a routine --once she had done nursing, he would take their daughter to burp her. He could then feel her breath on his neck and the sensation brought him chills every time. She was real.

His two beauties surrounded him now, one was nestled in the crook of his right arm while the other rested her head on his left shoulder. They enjoyed this simple family moment, then decided it would be wiser to try and catch some soon-to-be much needed sleep. Their angel was carefully placed in her bassinet by their bed before they slipped into the covers and fell into slumber.
