Into the Darkness: A Poem about Shadows
I am the bones of the Earth
That lies beneath your feet,
The wind whispers to me the tales of old,
Much farther than mind's eye can reach.
I am old as the stars above,
As the molten core inside the ground,
The secrets of my being,
Not a one has ever found.
Who is one to bind to me
To raw mortality?
For 'tis the thoughts and dreams of mortals
That be my vitality.
I am one with all the worlds,
As they be my demise.
For now I simply 'am',
Within the endless skies.
Loneliness be my lover,
For no one knows my soul.
Though heart and mind and spirit
All be in my control.
To know me is to know your fate.
To see what life and thought create.
For when from this world you depart,
I'm last to hear your beating heart.
I've lived the darkest hour,
And yet suffered the brightest day.
Only those elements time cannot wear,
Were before me made.
Who or what am I? You ask,
I answer:
Who am I but what I am?
