The early bird gets the worm. Usually. Not always.

It was quite unusual. Fire nation summers were hot, boiling hot. But the wind that blew that morning was cold, extremely cold.

The Kyoshi Warriors, except for Suki, were leaving. The ship chosen was small, and wooden. They were all lined up, Suki, Sokka, Toph, Katara, Aang, Zuko and Mai. Each of the warriors said their goodbyes. Except for one. Of course. The newest arrival shouted her goodbyes. Leaving behind a trail of kisses and hugs that left the recipient embarrassed and quite flustered. Until Mai. Mai, as usual, stood with a stoic, unaffected face. She was currently hanging on Zuko's arm, their bodies close enough for Zuko's body heat to warm them both. It was times like these that the energetic warrior wished she had her own fire bender. There were no hugs, no kisses, no words. Just a look. Now, that look could have meant many things, to many people. But right then it meant one thing.

I wanted him first.

Mai shifted subtly bringing Zuko closer. A shallow hug. The newest Kyoshi warrior turned and boarded the ship.

The pale girl watched her best friend board the ship. And, as she turned around to give the group of friends below a final look, the knife master gave her one in return. Now, this look could have meant many things, to many people.

But right then, and even now. It meant one thing.

But I got him.

The late bird gets the worm. Not always, but sometimes.
