Charlotte and Cooper had just gotten home; the ride home was quiet but not an awkward quiet. A quiet that made them both feel safe, a quiet that said everything they were thinking at the moment.
Charlotte wanted to tell him, she didnt wanna keep it a secret from him of all people. The love of her life, the one she knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. They finally got home and Charlotte knew she need to tell Cooper the truth, the whole truth she couldnt hide such a big secret from him she just wouldnt feel right and she didnt want to hide it.
"Cooper you need to sit down,"
"Are you okay?" he automatically asked concerned.
"Just come over here. Sit down next to me and take my hands." Cooper was scared he knew whatever was coming wasnt good but he didnt expect what would actually come out.
He did as she asked; all while worrying about what she was about to say. Would she tell him that because of the attack she would rather not get married? Or maybe she would want him to stay somewhere else until she felt safe around anyone. No what she was going to tell him was nothing he could have ever prepared for; what she was about to tell him was going to break his heart, it was going to make him feel more responsible for her attack then he already had.
"I told you that he robbed me, that he took my wallet and just kept hitting me."
"Yeah; that's what happened isnt it?"
"Yeah; but..."
"But what Charlotte?"
"After he took my wallet, he...he raped me."
Cooper's eyes filled with tears as he wrapped his arms around her holding her for dear life;
"Oh god Charlotte I'm so sorry! I should have been there, i should have protected you." Cooper continued to apologize as he held her. Seeing him like this how much he cared made Charlotte cry she didnt want him to feel at fault it wasnt his fault there was no way possible he could have stopped this.
"No Cooper look at me right now; this is not your fault! If you wanna help me please be here for me help me get passed this,"
"I love you so much Charlotte!"
"I love you too Cooper. Cooper can you promise me something?"
"Anything, what is it?"
"When I'm better, Start a family with me?"
"Char..."
"I was attacked Cooper...and raped but he could have done worse, he could have left me for dead. I want to start a family."
Cooper kissed Charlotte pulled away softly holding her face,
"When your better; we're going to have a whole load of little Freedmens running around here."
Charlotte smiled as he wiped away her tears, "Good."
Cooper helped Charlotte climb the stairs to thier bedroom where for one of the first times since before he found out about her previous engagement he held her, and she felt safe, safe in his arms, and they felt happy. Charlotte thought sleep would be hard but as Cooper spooned her she drifted to sleep to dream about the family that they would soon began to work on, as he took a breath in, smelling her hair. God he loved her smell he closed his eyes thanking god she was with him tonight and drifted to sleep to dream of thier perfect life together. 3
