A quick look at some interaction between Severus and Lily. Set during the summer before their fifth year.
July Evenings and Chocolate Chip Cookies
Severus walked slowly down the hill toward the river. It was a warm July evening, and the sky glowed orange with the setting sun. As he headed toward the large willow tree, he could see Lily sitting against it, legs crossed at the ankles, reading a book. Her sandals were laying a few inches to the left, no doubt she had kicked them off to allow her feet to feel the gentle breeze blowing that evening.
She looked up with a smile when she heard Severus' footsteps in the grass. He returned the smile as he took a seat next to her.
"I was starting to wonder if you had changed your mind," she said cheerfully, tucking a strand of auburn hair behind her ear.
"I got held up with some chores," Severus didn't want to admit that he had to wait until his father had left for the local pub before he could safely leave the house. Lily didn't say anything, but she could always sense when Severus was lying to her.
"That's one thing I don't miss about Hogwarts," said Lily with a grin. "I quite fancy not picking up after myself."
"Less than two months and we go back," said Severus happily. "It's our fifth year, so you'll finally have that prefect badge."
"Oh Sev, come on," she replied, blushing slightly. "I won't get it, Alice is a lot smarter than I am, and she makes less effort for the same grades."
"You really need to learn to take a compliment," said Severus, looking out at the dirty river.
Lily responded with a grin.
"Oh, I almost forgot," she said hastily, grabbing the canvas bag next to her. She pulled out a container with cookies in it. "Chocolate chip, your favorite. Mum made them today."
"Thanks," he replied, taking a cookie and almost inhaling it. Immediately he was taking another from the bowl.
Lily sat and watched her friend eat what she assumed would be all he would have for dinner. She knew his family wasn't exactly the caring type, and she often wondered why they even bothered having Severus in the first place if they weren't going to look out for him properly.
For a few moments there was complete silence, not in an awkward way, but in the way that two people that know each other almost completely experience. Finally Lily broke the silence.
"Severus," she started out shyly, not looking at him. "We're still going to be close, right? I mean, with O.W.L.'s and all, we're going to be pretty busy."
"Of course we'll still be close," he replied honestly, not able to think of anyone else he'd rather be with.
"Promise?"
"Always."
