He got up slowly, every bone in his body telling him to walk out the front door and pretend like nothing had happened. But he couldn't, there was something about this new partner of his that captivated him. He worried for her safety and sanity. He threw caution to the wind, as usual, and walked up behind her grabbing her around the waist pulling her closer to him. He met her eyes for a split second and that was all it took, he knew she was no longer thinking about Ruben or Carter, she was thinking about him. He gently put both hands on the sides of her face and kissed her, she kissed back harder, and before either of them wanted, they broke apart the need for air interrupting their moment of bliss.
She looked up at him, his eyes burning. "Why did you really come here tonight Dean? Not that I mind; I just want to know the truth." She smiled.
"I was worried about you to be honest, Jamie. You're new to all of this and it takes some time to adjust. When I saw your wrecked car there and you weren't in it, I feared the worst. You sounded so jacked up when you called." His eyes sought the floor as he recalled finding her there twitching with drugs still in her system. He had carried her to his Land Cruiser and taken her straight to his apartment. Her dress had fallen open slightly as he laid her on the bed; he very gently replaced the thin fabric praying to God that Howard hadn't touched her.
She watched his eyes turn cold and ducked down to meet his eyes. "Dean, what is it?"
"He didn't touch you did he?" His voice was rough with anger and fear.
"Dean, I…" Her voice trailed off as she turned to walk away. He grabbed her arm before she could turn away from him completely.
"Jamie, please answer me. The truth from here on out please. You never have to lie to me, remember that." He pulled her closer to him once more.
"He kissed me and he tried… well you know. But one of his girls distracted him, never been so thankful for a jealous party girl." She laughed quietly trying to lighten the mood. His eyes were cold as ice now and the air in the room was too thick with his anger.
"Son of a bitch is lucky he's in custody." He looked back to her now, needing that reassurance that she was alright. She smiled and touched his face tracing the lines around his eyes. "You worry too much, I'm fine. Did you even sleep last night?"
The corners of his lips turned up slightly. "Very little."
She kissed him again and slowly led him towards her bed. "You really shouldn't drive, and I don't want to be alone tonight."
"Don't want to be alone or you want to be with me, there's a difference you know. Hell, who am I kidding I really don't care which it is…" He slowly planted kisses on the side of her neck as she pulled him onto the bed.
"I want to be with you." She whispered. He tenderly took her neck and pulled her closer to him and kissed her again, not caring if it went any farther than this. He was, for the first time in his life, content.
