*Amy was special, and she still is. No one can take that away from her. But no one can take away my free will, either. *
"You can't give up on Amy," they say too quickly. "You're meant to be!"
Those were the words they used to convince me to start this.
"I can see you're unhappy. You should get together with Amy! You two are meant to be!" they said.
So I reluctantly asked Amy to have dinner with me. She said yes.
To be fair, it wasn't only their nagging that made me consider Amy.
She was a mystery, something I'd never come across before. No other girl had been so shy, yet so dependable. No other girl had been so smart yet modest, so happy with the littlest things, so unique.
That didn't change the fact that we were wrong for each other.
But that night, I could almost see what they meant. We never ran out of things to say. She always had an interesting, new thing to talk about, and I always had a witty reply. The conversation became a kiss, which became another 'date', and, before I knew it, we were engaged.
An engagement was supposed to be something good for your relationship. It wasn't. Amy and I fought relentlessly; we saw each other less, and I could never shake the feeling of being trapped. When I admitted that to some of my friends, they assured me I was just being the typical fiancé. The fact that it would be inappropriate for me to like any other girls, they informed me, was frightening me.
So I didn't call off the wedding.
What a hilarious twist of fate when she did.
"I'm so sorry, Ian," she whispered. "We're just… wrong for each other. I know everyone thinks we're perfect together but-"
"I understand completely," I interrupted her.
They didn't, obviously.
"You can't leave Amy," they repeat.
"Yes, I can, actually," I reply, walking away.
And it feels so good to be able to choose something because I wanted it.
AN: Well, this is fairly uncommon. They almost always end up together, or in tears. But I was like, they haven't shown any interest for books! Give it a rest, already!
Review, even if it's only to tell me I'm wrong and Amy and Ian belong together. :)
