It was raining heavily and yet Dennis did nothing to get too somewhere dry. He just stood there letting himself get soaking wet. The feeling of guilt that always came after he killed flooded his body and soul.
He had joined Carter when he was seventeen and when Carter was about protecting Muggleborns now Dennis was twenty-five and Carter was no longer about protecting Muggleborns; he now wanted them to rule the wizarding world.
Dennis and others like him who had joined Carter when grief still burnt their hearts and soul were dubbed mud soldiers by the press. The name had stuck and nearly every day, there were reports of Mud attacks against people. It didn't matter what their blood status was, their age or gender if they didn't fall into line they were dead.
Once you promised to stand by Carter forever that was it, there was no changing your mind and walking away from him.
There was a time when Dennis had been proud to serve Carter then he realised that Carter was exactly like Voldemort, and he was no better than a Death Eater.
But it was too late to walk away because Carter would just have his parents killed and when he found Dennis, he'd make him wish he was dead.
Carter had recruited Muggleborn and quite a few Half bloods from all around the world all sick of Purebloods walking all over them.
There were small groups putting up resistance against Carter, but they were failing. Dennis can remember clearly as rain drops drip from his nose the day the Golden Trio tried to bring down Carter.
Harry had been killed by Carter, Ron had escaped badly injured and Hermione was captured. He hadn't seen Hermione since that day, and he had no idea where Carter had her stashed.
He knew Hermione and Ron had a daughter together, who now would be roughly eight months old. A child was without its mother for nearly two months. Another thing Dennis felt guilty about and another thing he couldn't change even though he desperately wanted to.
He wonders as the coldness from the rain begins to set in whether if Colin had lived would life be different for him. Would Dennis have fought against or for Carter if Colin had lived?
If Colin could see him now what would he think of the man Dennis had become?. Dennis was certain the answer was his brother would be disgusted with the person he'd become.
Their parents were the last time he saw them after he told them everything he'd done. His mum cried and dad said he was no son of his.
He tried desperately to explain that when he first joined Carter, it was to protect Muggleborns and by the time it changed it was too late to back out if he did they would be killed.
His dad called him a coward who was making excuses and maybe that was true. Maybe it wasn't true Dennis didn't know but what he did know that he was stuck with no way out from the path he'd chosen.
