I used to be a normal kid. (God, I miss those days.) When I turned eleven I had matured enough to start my Pokémon journey, so I prepared for the day. I donned my red cap, strapped on my backpack, and bolted out the door. I was ready for whatever came my way. In fact, I was so ready that I went the wrong direction and made my way to route 1; however, before I reached danger territory, a voice stopped me.

"Hey, you! Wait! Don't go out! It's unsafe!"

I turned just in time to see Professor Oak standing before me. The Professor had lived many years, so his hair was grey and his face was wrinkled. His white lab coat shined brightly in the morning sun.

"Wild Pokémon live in tall grass!" the professor explained, "You need your own Pokémon for your protection. I know! Here, come with me!"

I followed the professor to the south side of town. That's where his lab was. We went inside and I was greeted by machines, bookcases, and a table on the other side of the facility. Before I could take a closer look, a familiar face stopped me.

"I've been waiting for you two!"

My rival, Blue, was grinning at us from ear to ear. We've been rivals since we were babies. He wore his black tee and purple jeans. Coincidentally, he is also the professor's grandson. I kinda have a little crush on his sister, but that's unimportant.

"Yo, Red! Gramps! What took you so long?" Blue inquired. Did I mention that my name is Red? Well, it is. Don't wear it out.

Professor Oak thought for a minute. Then he said, "Blue? Oh right! I brought you here too!"

We walked over to the table. I realized that there stood three Pokéballs, a round red and white sphere that contains a Pokémon, waiting for Blue and I.

Professor Oak explained, "You see, in my youth I was a skillful Pokémon trainer. Now I'm too old to be a Pokémon trainer as you can see. I need you two to go in my place, so I prepared three Pokémon on the table for you. Red, go ahead and choose!"

"What about me? I want one too!" Blue complained.

"Be patient Blue! You'll get one!" Oak scolded. I knew immediately which starter to choose. There was a Pokémon named Charmander that I was fond of. It is an orange lizard Pokémon that has a flame on the tip of its tail. I chose it. Of course, Blue picked Squirtle just to spite me. Squirtle was a blue, tiny turtle Pokémon that could shoot water. Since fire was weak to water, he would have the advantage sooner or later since Squirtle didn't have his water move yet. I thanked the professor for his kindness and went on my way; however, Blue stopped me.

"Red, you can't just walk out of here. Not without a Pokémon battle!" Blue prompted.

"Okay, I accept!" I turned my hat backwards. "But I'm not gonna lose!"
