You Were Mine
~
Sometimes I wake up crying at night
And sometimes I scream out your name
What right does she have to take you away
When for so long you were mine

I see you falling. And I can't stop it. I can't catch you and say, "Whoa, wait up. We're supposed to be falling together." I can't stop it but I see it in your eyes, you don't want to be stopped. You want to fall deep into her. You want to be in love because you deserve it. In this time of war, when all you've known is that bitter rage upon the battlefield, the pain of betrayal and the faint taste of a caring past. You need her. You need the woman who can help you through the night, not the little girl who craves your touch. Still… I wake up crying.

"Van!" Merle sat up in bed, her hands gripping the bed sheets. Another bad dream in a long line of restless nights, with only more to come. She sat up, pushing the covers off her legs. The cool night rushed through the window, brushing back her hair. Merle moved over to lean on the balcony, looking down into the garden.
It was a beautiful night. Brightly lit stars shinned down, winking merrily. The scent of roses and honeysuckles wafted into her room, causing her to become drowsy. The soft breeze ruffled the curtains causing them to float around her, brushing her ankles and tangling around her legs.
The only thing that ruined the night was the couple sitting on the stone bench amid the garden. She didn't know what they were talking about. She wasn't even sure they were talking. He was sitting a hands length away from her, twirling a long-stemmed rose in his fingers. She was sitting politely, hands folded neatly in her lap.
And it broke her heart.
She knew as well as any other onlooker that they were in love. She could tell by the way he fiddled with the rose, hair hanging slightly over his eyes and the masked expression. The one that hid away all his thoughts. Merle could that the girl was in love by the way she glanced at him, not wanting to miss his actions. By the way, it seemed every thing he said intrigued her. By the way she smiled.
They were deeply in love and she was nothing… but alone. Alone and depressed. Depressed that he didn't want her, but instead wanted the girl from the Mystic Moon.
She loved him and he didn't even care.
But that was okay… because just to see him smile set all things straight.
And he was happy.
So, she would be too.
