Lights go out

It was raining Kakashi realised fuzzily. Huge drops of half solidified liquid splashed and shattered on his numb body. He couldn't remember how he'd ended up in this situation. He twitched his right hand and felt mud, soft squishy mud. He grimaced.

He forced his eyes open and wished he hadn't. Sharp white pain shot through his head almost sending him back into unconsciousness. He groaned and felt like he was going to be sick.

"Shhh. Hold still Kashi-kun," a soft voice commanded.

Kakashi frowned, that voice was familiar, the nickname too. "R-Rin?" he rasped. He could almost see her now, face chalk white splattered with mud. Her eyes were filled with concern and weariness. She looked exhausted.

Rin smiled down at him, "Nearly done Kakshi-kun."

Kakashi opened his mouth to say something put couldn't piece together a coherent thought. He felt some strength returning. He could move his hand!

Rin gave him a watery smiled, she had to fix him. She couldn't loose Kakashi as well after everything. She could feel herself growing weaker but it didn't matter, she had to fix Kakashi.

Off to the left was another shinobi. Rin had patched him up a best as she could and thankfully he hadn't been hurt very badly. He'd been half lying over Kakashi when she'd arrived as if to protect her best friend with his body.

All their attackers were dead, body parts scattered across the water logged clearing like someone had ripped them a part or blown them to smithereens.

Saito Reiji was wet. In fact he felt like a drowned cat. His side throbbed and his sight wavered sending everything of kilter. He pulled himself up so he was kneeling in the mud next to his rescuer.

The med-nin gave him gave him a weak smile, "How you holding up?"

Reiji winced, "I've been better."

She nodded and turned back to her other patient, "I'm not going to make it," she stated calmly as if she was taking about the weather.

Reiji did a double take, "Ya What?"

"Promise me you'll get Kashi-kun home," she suddenly pleaded fixing him with baleful eyes.

Reiji forced himself to look away, damn women and their huge eyes. "Sure kid," he groused.

The girl laughed softly, "Hardly a kid."

She had a point Reiji mused, none of them were children any more. War did that to you.

Rin felt herself slipping away and closed her eyes a small smile playing at her lips, I'll be seeing you soon Obito, she thought.

Kakashi noticed something was wrong almost immediately. He was getting stronger but Rin was fading. He tried to sit up. Damn it Rin your not supposed to die fixing me. He struggled weakly, "R-Rin...leave it...don't...please..."

He felt a hand run through his sodden hair, "Don't worry Kashi-kun. I'm going to fix everything."

"No, Rin!"

Reiji caught the girl before she hit the ground. He hadn't realised that she was going to give the copy ninja all her chakra but she'd already gone before he could call her on it. He closed his eyes and swore. Damn war!

He sighed heavily and pulled her dog tags from around her neck and shoved them in his weapons pouch.

The Hatake brat was still struggling to get up opening his mouth to call for his friend but nothing but a strangled squeak came out.

"Oi brat get a grip," Reiji snapped.

The copy ninja didn't still so Reiji knocked him out and hefted him over his shoulder. The rain fell harder like tiny needles. Reiji gave the med-nin one last look, "Hope yer happy."

He set of into the dying light a blazing fire the only sign that anything had ever happened.

Kakashi came round as they neared the war bunker. It was dark now, not even a star in the sky. Kakashi closed his eyes again and a solitary tear leaked from his red eye. Rin was gone, just like Obito. The lights had gone out, leaving him alone in the dark.
