Odd Job Jack

Chapter 1: Stuck in a bird cage

The East Indian Trading Company was probably one of the most powerful companies in the Caribbean. It expanded everyday and thousands of items were traded with foreign countries. The operation was lead by a man named Cutler Beckett, a person greatly respected by fellow sailors.

Beckett was both very powerful and very evil all at once. While he had a good strong company, he had an extreme desire for power over the sea.

"Piracy is a dreadful subject. If we ever want to expand to the West, we must stamp them all out!" Beckett told his faithful assistant Mercer.

At first glance, Mercer appeared to be a normal, everyday member of the East Indian Trading Company. However, he had a much darker side than that. The man approved of Beckett's decision to take control of the sea, and would stop at nothing to make sure the plan came through.

Mercer was plainly dressed, despite his high status in the company. He gazed at the world with a sullen expression on his face, deeply tanned by the Caribbean sun. Whenever he wasn't wearing his fancy hat, one would notice his long brown hair, neatly tied back in a ponytail, not a hair out of place. The outfit Mercer wore looked like a faded version of the British Navy's red suit. Brown was the colour the commoners wore. People often questioned why he liked it.

"Mercer I would like you to collect our newest member today." Beckett told Mercer. "I want you to keep a close eye on him while he is here."

"Who is the man sir?" he asked.

"I believe his name is Jack Sparrow."

Jack looked at himself through a full-length mirror. He had a depressed look on his face. Or maybe the suit was on too tight.

Like Mercer, Jack had long black hair tied into a ponytail. However, unlike Beckett's assistant, he wore a bright blue suit with gold buttons and black pants.

"Would you look at the nice law abiding citizen of Britain." Hs father commented.

Jack didn't look at his dad. He just glared at his reflection through the mirror.

"A man like you should be free. Why else would we be given the name Sparrow?" he continued. The comment wasn't helping Jack feel any better.

He put a hand on his son's shoulder. "You are a bird not meant to be caged."
