Shadow Of You
Simon
Everything in this damned house reminded him of her. Wherever his feet led him, he'd unintentionally trip over another memory. Her lips that always tasted of strawberries, the delicate curve of her waist, her infectious laughter, the tattoo on the small of her back...
He pounded the paint onto the canvas, pushing away his memories as far away as he was able. He hoped that the activity would force his mind to change itself, to think of the serenity he could achieve with a paintbrush, to remind himself of the ability he had to completely drain his brain of its content completely.
The brush was swirled on the board, he didn't look to see which color his brush soaked up. It turned out to be an odd marriage of crimson and orange and a little green peeking through. He pressed the brush against the canvas. He didn't care which way the paint went, he didn't even really pay attention. He let his subconscious take over, letting himself be consumed by the emptiness and silence of the house. It felt as if he was falling into an abyss, never hitting bottom, only the rocks. Alone.
But when his mind became lucid and returned, he didn't feel alone.
It was as if her essence or something silly like that was still here, floating around him. A constant reminder. A constant shadow. At first, he welcomed it with a smile. Now it was painful to think of allowing his smile to return to his face and some part of him wished it never did.
His head shook and he focused on the canvas with blank eyes. The outline of a woman's figure – her figure – stood out with the odd mix of the three colors against the boring background.
He took another drink straight from the bottle and titled his head back, closing his eyes, falling into the abyss once again.
