Prologue

Matthew watched as the car stopped and two people got out. There was a man and a woman, both elegantly dressed, and looking thoroughly excited. They stood by the car for a short while, until finally a gangly teenager got out, looking like he would do anything not to be there. The family headed for the grand hall nearby, which had opera music pouring out of it, and several other families were headed the same way.

Suddenly, a hooded man stepped out of the shadows. "It's time." Matthew found himself getting up, and following the man to the car. The man placed a hand on the window of the car, and it began to glow, smoking slightly, and a small gap appeared, widening with every second. When it was wide enough, the man put his hand it and opened the door. Once it was open, he covered his hands with a cloth, made of the same material as his clothes, it was similar to silk, but more rough, and it seemed to absorb light somehow.

Before they could get in however, a yell caught their attention, and they turned to face the teenager running towards them, almost tripping over his own feet. "Hurry" said the hooded man, sitting in the passenger seat. Matthew sighed and stepped to the side. He was so tired of this that he wasn't going to bother any more. He would take his jail time and be done with it. Anything was better than night after night of helping this man, following him everywhere, doing all his slave work. "Get in!" the man urged again, but Matthew remained silent, so he had no choice but to swear and climb to the drivers side where he started hot wiring, the wires smoking as he touched them.

By the time the teenager arrived, the man has started to drive, but the car park had only one exit, the man would have to turn the car round at the end. The teenager looked at Matthew but didn't say anything, he took a deep breath and stepped onto the road. Since the hooded man had to come back this way, he couldn't get past, as he wouldn't run over the boy, in theory. But instead of slowing down, the man hit the gas, smoke now pouring out of the window as the steering wheel began to melt. Matthew realised what was going to happen before it did, and he knew what had to be done. He ran forward and forced the other boy out of the way, but before Matthew himself could move, the car slammed into him.. and then everything went black.
