When I was younger
I saw my daddy cry

Toph was only little when it happened, but she could remember it easily. Her father storming outside, yelling and crying after a fight with her mum. She could feel his unhappy vibrations and had walked over to him. "What's wrong Daddy?" She had asked as she sat down next to him and tilted her head.
Broke his own heart
And I watched
As he tried to reassemble it
"Nothing Toph, dear. It's just that love can sometimes make people unhappy." Toph didn't understand back then, but now she knew what her father had meant when he had said those words to her.
And my momma swore that
She would never let herself forget
She heard them fight again that night. She buried her head in the pillow to try and block out the screaming and sobbing, but her overly sensitive ears wouldn't stop listening.
And that was the day that I promised
I'd never sing of love
If it does not exist
Once the house was quiet, she curled up under her blankets and chanted softy. "I'll never fall in love, I'll never fall in love, I'll never fall in love…"
But darlin
You are the only exception
But then she met him. And she couldn't stop herself from breaking her promise.

When his mother died, Sokka immediately though that love must always die. Because if his mum and dad could be torn apart, then everyone that was in love could ne. And when Yue sacrificed herself and Suki was killed shortly after the end of the war, he knew he was right.
And we've got to find other ways
To make it alone
Keep a straight face
He stopped believing and started ignoring the past, anything that would stop him from breaking down.
I've always lived like this
Keeping a comfortable
Distance
He had distanced himself from Katara and Aang, one because he didn't want to disturb them when they were having one of their 'moments', and two, because he was too afraid to become any closer to them.
And up until now
I had sworn to myself
That I'm content
With loneliness
He tried to make himself believe that he was happier by himself, while others had their respective soulmates, but as much as he tried, it didn't work.
Because none of it was ever worth the risk, well
You are the only exception
But it was safer that way. Until she joined the group. She defied risk. She was untouchable. And he fell for her.

Toph considered herself a realist. She knew she had to let go of him.
But she couldn't.
