Hey so I've been a little melancholy lately and I've been neglecting my other stories. Don't worry I've been thinking about them. But it has to be the best it can be because you guys deserve no less. But this little bugger popped into my head and decided to stay. I don't know how long it will be or where this will go but feedback is nice.
Don't own. Sadly.
It's been months since that night; truthfully she stopped counting after the first week. About 4 weeks since he proposed and she said no. It's been almost 3 since Valentine's Day. And no matter how long it has been. Her world hasn't righted itself yet. She doesn't think it ever will. She should have expected that though. She just wasn't meant to be happy. No. That's not true, she was happy for a while. She had everything. She had a "family", her perfect job, and him. She still had those things, physically. But everything, everyone, is changing. And they are leaving her behind. Sure, they don't mean to, but they do. And it hurts her now. Because he came and tore down her walls. HE cut through them with his charm and gallant demeanor as if they were melted butter. She could have fought harder, she could have fled, but she didn't. She wanted to feel again. She wanted to be Temperance again, not Dr. Brennan. She needed to be her. And he helped her do it.
And then it shattered, like the broken dish she had dropped as a child in foster care. That caused her to be locked in a trunk. That's what it feels like now, like she's trapped in a trunk. Ever since he said his confession to her in front of the Hoover.
When he said he wanted it all. That he knew she was "the one." Her metaphoric heart had soared. Then as soon as it exploded it plummeted like a meteor from outer space. He had said it all. Almost. He never said he loved her. In his declaration he had never said those words. And, if had been only her heart on the line, she might have gone for it. But it wasn't just her heart it was his heart as well. His was far more precious. So she did the hardest thing she thought she'd ever had to do. That assumption being incorrect, but that will come later. She told him no. That she couldn't change enough to be with him. And what he did next crushed her already cracked heart. He said that he was moving on. Not ten breathes before he said he wanted thirty….or forty….or fifty years he said he'd move on. Not that she expected him to wait around for her. But then again maybe she did. Since he had done it before.
They had kept promises to remain friends and partners. It had worked, to an extent. Their solve rate never decreased but they weren't them. They weren't the center. She doesn't think they ever will be again. Especially with everything that has happened since setting foot into that airport. They didn't even hug good-bye. She had taken the job in Maluku to hopefully gain some perspective on her emotions. That definitely worked in her favor. Not.
So what do you think? I think I'm going to continue it. Well, anyhow, thanks for reading.
