He's at her graduation. He can't help himself. He feels like he owes it to her, to be there on the day he missed four years ago.
He sees her smiling brilliantly, finally ready to face the real world without the otherwise always important question of education hanging over her head.
He's leaning into a tree, hopefully standing hidden from her view in the shadow, he doesn't feel like sunshine this very moment. His hands are thrust into the pockets of his grey jeans and his almost black hair keeps falling into his eyes. His shoulders are hunched.
She couldn't get married; he couldn't let her make that big mistake. She wasn't supposed to be with someone else, she isn't right for someone else. She needs someone who knows how to appreciate her, who doesn't take her for granted, who doesn't take her choices away in life. She needs to see the world otherwise she will hate it. She needs, for once, to carry out her own dreams, dreams that he knows still remains unaltered.
It's her turn and she walks with the confidence of a woman, shoulders held high, onto the podium and her diploma is given to her. She smiles at her tearful mother and whoever is with her and it lights up his world. Everything becomes clearer and he smiles to himself, but then she is gone from his view and he takes a deep breath to calm his thundering heart.
He waits until the last diploma is given away, because he just need to see her brilliant eyes, soft hair and oh so soft skin, then he'll walk away and she will never know he was there in the first place.
They are walking towards him, the mother, the father and the grandparents with her in between. They take pictures and wish her a happy day and he's enthralled. His legs wont move, his brain isn't functioning anymore. He needs to leave now before he can't leave without her seeing.
But-
Jess? She says and everything he planned not to tell her rushes from his brain faster than he can say his own name.
Rory.
The word was a mantra in his head since he fell for her innocence the very first day he saw her. He breathes it out.
Rory.
He leaves the protection of the shadow and put one foot in front of the other in order to reach her.
His mother quiets, and for once in his life he's glad she's observant enough to catch the seriousness of the situation.
What was he doing here? Why did he come? He tries to answer it truthfully.
I owe it to you.
She smiles and she's holding back tears. He lifts his hand to her face and gently wipes a lone tear from her cheek, while he nervously fingers the pack of cigarettes in his pocket.
You can trust me now. Go, be Rory and know I'll always… but he can't find the right words, but she understands.
She nods. Okay.
