He sat in his truck, staring into the darkness, filled with anger, confusion, sadness, yearning. He'd thought she was dead. Hell, he'd thought everyone was dead. But the most important thing had screamed from inside his head: SHE was gone. He hadn't known how to cope, to begin to process. When he'd discovered she was alive, here, still so real, a rush of longing had filled him, slamming him in the gut; and even now, hours later, the overwhelming need to be near her had driven him to her house to stare, aching and wishing for what could never be.
