Summary: LEX LUTHOR HAS TO BREAK SOMEONES HEART IN ORDER TO FIX HIS OWN.
He sighs when he looks into her eyes. They're so full of hope and happiness he thinks they're not real. He wants to tap them to see if she'll blink, but he's afraid that she'll cry. They always cry. It's like an unwritten code that all women have, he tells himself, that they must cry whenever they feel that their love, life or looks are on the line. It's instinctive almost.
"I'm really glad you called Lex." She says in a soft voice.
But he's not anymore.
"Well, I have something to talk to you about." His voice is strong and commanding, feigning the control he doesn't have.
"Go ahead." She offers. But he doesn't know what to say. He's not sure how to break her heart. He's done it so many times without any reason or any emotion but now that there is something on the line, he's confused. Even though he's replayed the events in his head over and over again, he can't work out what he reaction will be. One thing he does know is that it'll hurt. Even if there's no love like he suspects, he knows it'll at least smart her poor heart.
The truth, his mind echoes, the truth is the only way to get her to understand. "I don't know how to tell you this, but I know it's the truth and I hope you'll appreciate that."
She waits for him to continue as he gathers his words and thoughts together. "Come on Lex, you can tell me anything. You know that." She puts a reassuring hand on his and gives it a squeeze. He stares at it for a moment.
"Hey guys!" It's her. She doesn't realise their having an intimate moment. She looks at the pained look in his eyes and realises her mistake and promptly feigns her exit. "I thought I'd say hey, and now I've said it, I'll er, leave." She doesn't mean to intrude but Lex can see the genuine embarrassment in her eyes and he can't help but gravitate towards it. He wants to tell her it's ok, but she leaves so he turns back to the other beautiful woman in his life.
He wishes she was someone else. Why can't you be her? he thinks as he gazes back into her eyes. He has to tell her now, before his heart breaks anymore.
"Lana, I'm in love with someone else." He says sharply.
There's a flash in her eyes. In that one instant, while her heart breaks his slowly seeps together again.
He doesn't tell her who it is.
He doesn't tell her it's Chloe.
