Tony Jones came into his friend Scott's home wearing the biggest smile Scott had ever seen.
"So," Scott said, "what's with the grin"
"I'm happy"
"Gee, I think I figured that out. Do you want to tell me why?"
"Not yet," Tony said, "I'll tell you after you open your birthday gifts"
"Why?"
"Well I want you to open my gift last," Tony explained, "and it's important that Dominique be there when you open this gift"
Scott looked at him with interest
"Tony," he said, "is there something you're not telling me"
"Well I'm NOT telling you what your birthday gift is," Tony said laughing, "and that is because that would ruin the surprise"
"There's only one thing that would make me happy," Scott told his friend.
"I know"
"It can't be… is it possible… I would… I mean-"
Tony laughed.
Scott got a lot of gifts. He got a briefcase from Luke. He got a book from Laura. Bobbie gave him a record of his favorite songs. Lucy gave him a gift certificate to La-Shays, a famous Italian Restaurant.
"Okay Tony," Ruby said, "why don't you go next?"
"I don't think so. I'm going last"
"Come on," Ruby said, "I want to know what this big surprise it."
"Want in one hand and crap in the other and see which one fills up first," Tony said quoting a line from Grumpy Old Men.
Ruby got him a set of golf balls. Amy got him a session pass to Pool 4 U, a really nice country club where the pools are actually warm.
"Trust me," she said, "within the next year you may need to use it once or twice"
"Um… okay," Scott said utterly confused, "thanks?"
Dominique and Amy shared a grin.
"Okay," Tony said, "Dominique I believe it is your turn"
"Right," she affirmed and gave Scott her gift which happened to be round trip tickets to New York
"Now WHAT is your gift," everyone asked Tony.
"Okay," Tony said handing one manila envelope to Scott and one to Dominique, "on 3 open it"
"3," everyone said together.
"What is that," Scott asked, "all I see is a bunch of goobly-gook that makes no sense"
"That may be what it looks like," Tony said, "but what it is… it's Dominique's test results. I don't know how it happened but the tumors are gone. There isn't a trace of them left. HAPPY birthday Scott"
