Stefan was watching from afar as he watched his and Klaus' plan play out. Well, he wasn't watching per say but rather waiting for the right moment to make his move. As Michael attacked Klaus, Stefan tensed watching carefully…wait for it…wait for it…NOW! Stefan sprung towards Michael and Klaus. He knocked Michael out of the way just as he was about to plunge the stake through Klaus' heart. He ignored Michael's screams and the murmurs of the people around him. All of his attention was focused on Klaus. Klaus slowly stood up, injured from his fight, and looked at him.
"Congratulations Stefan you're free." With those four words Stefan felt a switch flipping inside of him and he smiled. Stefan turned around with tears in his eyes and saw Elena's shocked face. It was all he could do not to run up to her and kiss her senseless. Instead he took three long strides towards her, pulled her into his arms ignoring her shocked gasp, and kissed her. She didn't respond right away put soon she was kissing him back and her arms went around his neck as her fingers threaded themselves into his hair. They pulled back foreheads touching and eyes glistening with tears. Stefan was the first to speak.
"I am sorry for how, I've acted. I can understand if you won't forgive me." He began to pull away but Elena's arms were strong around his neck.
"Stefan, of course I forgive you, when Klaus set you free you could've walked away and chosen to extract revenge but instead you chose me. That's all I ever wanted. I love you." Stefan's heart filled with joy at her little speech. He kissed her again and when they pulled back he whispered softly to her.
"I love you too."
