Silence: AlxEd

I like it when it's dark. Why do I? That's simple. He looks peaceful when he sleeps. When he lays there, immobile, he looks even more beautiful than when wide awake.

Alphonse Elric sat up in his bed. Soft clang sounds accompanied his every movement, until the stood, the noise of his feet echoing in the wooden planks echoed in the quiet night.

In the bed next to him, his brother Edward slept uneasily, his golden hair sprawled in the pillow like some sort of halo.

His breathing was ragged and loud, coming in unsteady gasps.

"Brother? Are you okay?" Al's words came in barely a whisper, full of concern.

"Al…AL! You can't take him away from me! He's my little brother! He's the only family I have left! AL!!!" Edward's voice rang through the room, as he thrashed and begged in his sleep.

Alphonse's heart would have contracted in his chest if he had one. Still, a strange feeling emerged, intense and burning like fire, carving his brother's pain into his soul: the only piece of humanity he had left.

The boy sat in the edge of the bed and put his cold palm to Edward's forehead.

"It's okay, brother. I'm here. Whatever you're afraid of, I'm with you and I'll help you face it." He mumbled; his tone slightly metallic.

After a few minutes of agony, Edward's face softened as did his breath, clear evidence that the nightmare was finally fading away.

Al's hands tangled a little in his brother's hair, as he caressed it softly. Sometimes he wondered how hands that were so big could be so careful…

Ed's eyes opened slowly as he started to regain consciousness.

"Al? What are you doing?"

"Nothing, brother."

"Aw, c'mon on!"

"You were having a nightmare. Again."

Ed's amber eyes drifted, half opened, staring into his own hands.

"Ed…I've been meaning to tell you…"

A single, loud snore came from the Fullmetal Alchemist's bed, breaking the night's peaceful beauty.

Alphonse Elric sighed, saddened.

I love you, brother. I really do. I'm just condemned to do it in eternal silence.

And no sound was heard other than an occasional snore and a sleeper's breath.
