Loss

Prompt: #002 Loss

Notes: Written for philosophy 20

Scully had lost so much since she had been assigned to debunk Agent Fox Mulder's work on the X Files. She had lost her sister, Melissa, to a bullet that was supposed to be for her. She had lost her previously good health when she had been abducted awhile back and given cancer, and had lost every memory of what had happened.

All she had were some small pieces sliding into place as she moved forwards in life, yet never quite fitting together properly to form a clear picture. There was no tangible evidence to prove the extent of what had been done to her.

She had even begun to lose faith in what she had been taught to believe in for her entire life. There was only a thread of hope stitching those old habits to her and every day, more and more of the connection diminished, fading away and unravelling like a ball of coloured wool left outside to endure the elements.

Perhaps the most significant loss that she'd watched slip through her fingers was her scepticism. She had lost her ability to find the truth purely in scientifically proven ways and had begun to turn to the paranormal phenomena that years ago, she'd have laughed at and denied any belief in without hesitation.

She had lost so much, yet somehow it was all worth it. She had Mulder now, after all. She couldn't have wished for a better partner, a better friend or a better lover. She had William too, the child she had always wanted and since her cancer had never expected to ever have.

She still felt like she had lost something more though, that she had relied heavily on at some point. It didn't occur to her that along with all of the things she'd lost over the years and cried over, was her loneliness.
