That poem haunted his memory, if only he had been to bed that night, if only he had read it before…before. She had done this because of him, he knew, he had always known. His friends had reassured him that it was not his fault, but he knew those were lies. Harry and Ron and Ginny had consoled him, but it was no use, he still found himself where she had been three weeks ago.
They had found her body twisted and mangled from landing on the soft green grass thousands of feet below the astronomy tower. Her bushy, brown hair splayed around her beautiful face like a halo. He stood now where she had stood on a night similar to this one, the sky a deep velvet black, stars twinkling back at the castle.
Draco Malfoy stared up at the stars, much like the love of his life, Hermione Granger, had stared up at them not too long ago. Balancing himself on the banister separating himself from the long fall to the ground much like she had not long ago he thought of her. It was his fault, he knew. She had told him she loved him and he had run away. He had been afraid, no one had ever loved him before, and he had never loved anyone…until her. She had gone to the astronomy tower that night she had confessed her feelings to him.
With another breath Draco hopped from the ledge, wind whipping his hair, stinging his eyes, but he knew, he knew that by doing this he would join her in eternity, the way it was supposed to be while they were alive, but she had taken that away from him by jumping and the only thing he wanted was to be with her.
"I love you Hermione. I will see you soon." he whispered before he felt his body impact with the ground and he felt as though his soul had separated from his body. Glancing around the grounds he saw what he was looking for, a silvery pathway through the forbidden forest. Gliding slowly over he followed the path until he paused in a clearing, flowers blooming around him. Looking up he saw the reason for everything good in his life. From between two tall evergreens stepped Hermione, gliding across the clearing to him.
"I knew you would find me." she smiled lightly. Draco pulled her into his arms and kissed her gently.
"I'm so sorry, Mione. I love you so much." he whispered.
"I love you too. But you didn't have to join me yet. I would have waited." she whispered. Draco chuckled warmly, his laughter rippling through her, warming her chilled frame.
"But I would not have lived much longer without you anyway." he whispered in her ear. "Are you ready to go, love?" Hermione nodded with a smile, his arm wrapped possessively around her waist, her head resting on his shoulder.
"Let us begin the rest of our lives…together." she whispered as they began to glide to the golden gates, brilliant light bursting from behind the gates.
