The girl with the honey blonde, curly hair that falls just above her shoulders; the girl who lived just right next door to mine, the girl who I grew up with and played with each day of my childhood, the girl who I protected since we were old enough to hold hands and cross the roads ourselves, the girl who now stood beside her locker being swarmed by the school's footballers. As she looks up, our eyes meet and I can tell she's annoyed with the boys surrounding her. Growing up together, I was always there for her and vice versa. I'm the first person she'd turn to if she needs help. I know her inside and out, I could read her like an open book, we both understand each other without the necessity of words. Meredith Katherine Grey is a beautiful woman inside and out, and the man she falls in love with will be the luckiest.

Now that we're both in our senior year, it is our last year in high school. It has been 5 years since I held my tongue, not saying anything; trying to hold my emotions at bay, trying to not beat the crap out of the guy that would ask her out, trying to keep the pain in me for when she tells me how her date went, how much she enjoyed it, and I'm still trying. It won't be long until college; we both promised ourselves that we'd be going to the same college. As soon as we get to college, I'll take her out to a nice dinner and then I will profess my love for her.

But things change, plans don't always happen the way you plan them. I was too late. Just before high school finished, Trent Johnson asked her to go out with him to prom night and since then, they've been going out.

Even now, we're in college and they're still happily dating. That's all I want for her; as long as she's happy, that's good enough for me. I, Derek Shepherd, would give Meredith Grey the whole universe if she asked for it, that's how much I love her.
