"Whatever chances you had of fixing our city dies with Harvey's reputation. We bet it all on him." Said Gordon. "The Joker took the best of us and tore him down. People will lose hope."
"They won't." Growled the Batman. "They must never know what he did."
"Five dead. Two of them cops. You can't sweep that up." Gordon disagreed.
"But the Joker cannot win." Said Batman, moving over to the body of Harvey. "Gotham needs its true hero."
"No..." Gordon whispered as he realised what Batman was saying.
"You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain. I can do those things... Because I'm not a hero, unlike Dent." Batman took a breath to say more but a young voice called down from above.
"Why don't you just say the Joker did it?" Asked Gordon's son. "He didn't have a reason for killing all those other people so why would he need one to kill them?"
Batman and Gordon stared at each other for a while, blinking, unable to say anything. Finally Gordon spoke. "From the mouths of babes..."
"Yeah. Why didn't we think of that?"
"Not sure. Seems pretty obvious now that I think about it. I mean you're wanted enough as it is for being a vigilante, why make it harder on you?"
"I feel really stupid."
"So do I. Well, I'll get this cleared up and we can add Dent to the Joker's death toll, and the people Harvey killed as well." Said Gordon looking down at Harvey. When he looked back up Batman was gone.
He grabbed his radio and held the transmit button. "All units move in, we're looking for a man in a clown mask, average height, brown hair. The Batman is in pursuit."
As Gordon radioed in instructions to chase down someone who didn't exist Batman reached his bat-cycle and took off. He had to catch as many of Joker's thugs as he could before they got away. He didn't want there to be any chance that they'd free the clown prince of crime.
Above them all Gordon's son, James, turned to his sister. "Adults are so stupid sometimes aren't they?"
"Yep," She replied. "They really are."
AN: Seriously, Joker killed how many people? Why couldn't they blame Dent's crimes on him or his cronies? Gordon says they can't cover it up, then they go ahead and say Batman did it... Oh well, it was the whole idea of the film, that Batman was a symbol, not a hero. But now his image is tainted. Wonder how they'll 'redeem' Batman to the public in the third movie, if they even try at all.
