Hi, y'all. This is my first maze runner story, I couldn't contain myself after watching the last movie. My love for Newt (actually mainly (only) for Thomas Sangster) rose to its peak and here I am.. ((:
Keep in mind that I haven't read any of the books (sry) and all of my knowledge about the actual maze is based on the movies and others fanfiction I've read, so I hope that doesn't bother anyone too much (and if it does….ok) I made up some unimportant characters as well because I don't know everyone by name
Also I want this story to focus mainly on the romance because that's the only reason I personally read fanfiction and im not creative enough to create an entirely different story. Of course there'll be some action and other stuff than fluff as well, but I wont go into too much detail there. Also, the other storyline and action will probably be completely different from anything that happens in the movie because personally im really tired of reading the same scenes as we've all seen in the movie (or read in the books.. cant relate) again and again in every possible fanfic out there
So because of that some things might not make sense with the original storyline but im just trying to make it less boring (I hope it works)
Thanks for reading xxxx I hope you enjoy
Obviously I don't own maze runner (do I have to mention this)
A screeching sound made me jump awake. Breathing heavily, I touched my forehead and looked down at my shaking fingers to find the sweat I had been expecting. I looked around in shock and noticed I was in my room. Looking through the window at the end of my bed, I realized what caused me to get so worked up.
'Right, the maze.. as always' I mumbled to myself as I closed my eyes and touched my temples, trying to control my breathing.
I had been is this damn place for almost 6 months now, but the sound of the walls opening at dawn still woke me up on the regular. Especially on days like these, when I had been dreaming. I only known I had been dreaming because of the state I was in when I woke up; ragged breathing and shaking as if I'd just witnessed a murder.
The content of my dreams was unfortunately never really revealed to me, as the bits and pieces I did remember completely left my memories in the first 10 seconds after waking up. The only thing I did know was that they weren't pleasant dreams, as I always felt exhausted and empty after having them.
To be honest, I don't even know if I would like to remember them. Maybe they could've revealed something about the purpose of this place to me, but the truth was that we were still stuck here, and I wasn't sure if knowing the purpose would do any good to my emotional state. I'm actually quite sure that knowing who I was, knowing which people I've left behind would make me more depressed. That's why I try to keep myself sane by believing that I can't miss my life how it was when I can't remember anything about it.
Sighing, I got up and prepared for another day of work, pushing every dark thought to the back of my mind.
'Morning, Alex' Jeff said with a smile as I walked into our med-jack hut.
'Morning' I responded, 'So what's on the planning today?'
Clint looked up from the homemade medicine shelf he was re-organising, 'Unless someone get bored and decides to break some of his bones, not much'. He turned as he struggled to replace the older medicine in the back of the shelf with some freshly-made ointment; 'you might wanna help me with this, though, if there's nothing else you're dying to entertain yourself with'.
I smiled as I walked towards him and handed him the remaining medicine on the table next to him. 'Then when we're done with this, I'll just go check out the gardens for a bit, see if they need any help there'
'alright, make sure we can find you if somethings up, though' Clint responded.
I nodded as I started re-arranging the herbal teas in front of me.
After a short 2 hours, my work was finished with the med-jacks and I headed to the gardens to see if my help came in handy there. It didn't.
'Hi, Dennis. Everything going well here?' I asked upon arrival. Dennis was an average guy. I wasn't friends with him, because we simply hadn't spent that much time in each other's company, but we didn't dislike each other either. I kind of didn't really have an opinion about him, he was just this gardener guy I chatted with to pass time sometimes.
Dennis looked up from the vegetables he was watering, 'Yea, sure. Nothing to do at the med-jacks I'm guessing?'
I shrugged 'not really, so I was hoping I could help you guys out somehow'.
Before I could hear his answer, a quick hard tap to my head made me turn around. I didn't have to turn around to know who the perpetrator was, though.
'Minho, you're a shucking bitch' I deadpanned, but the glint in my eyes must've been obvious anyway.
'Well, aren't you a ray of sunshine as always' he grinned as he squeezed my cheeks.
I failed to contain my smile as a smacked his hands away. Giving a slight nod to Dennis, who smiled understandingly in return, I followed Minho to whichever place he was heading.
'So where are we heading?' I asked as we walked side by side.
'Where do you think we're heading..' he asked as he wiggled his eyebrows at me.
I rolled my eyes but smiled anyway, guessing; 'It's not quite time to have lunch yet, boy'.
'It's always a good time to have lunch, Lexy' he countered.
After pretending to think about that statement for a few seconds, I agreed; 'wise words'.
'I know' he answered, 'Besides, the others decided to eat early today, since the new greenie is supposed to arrive today'.
I looked up at Minho in surprise for a second, before regaining my composure. 'Oh, right. Forgot about that' I answered.
'Yea' was Minho's response. The rest of our walk we continued in silence. A newbie arriving was always a reminder of the cruel reality we lived in. To be honest, I hated it when someone new arrived. The confusion, the scared look in their eyes, the shock.. I didn't want to see that, because it reminded me of my first day in here. Living in the Glade honestly didn't seem all that bad on a day-to-day basis, simply due to the fact that everyone tried to act as if we weren't forcibly being kept here and tried to make the best of our situation. The day a newbie arrived everyone would be reminded, and there would be this uncomfortable atmosphere where everyone tried to deal with their emotions in their own way, without making it known to the others.
When we got to the kitchen, we both got some food and looked around for a place to sit. Before I even got a chance to scan the cafeteria, Minho was already walking towards a table so I, being the puppy that I am quickly followed behind him. Arriving at the table of his choice I noticed Alby and Newt had already taken place and were engaged in some serious conversation, probably about the greenie that was supposed to arrive in a few hours.
'Hi shanks, mind I we join y'all?' Minho asked in his usual funny voice even though he was already moving to sit down.
'I always mind when you join us', Newt sarcastically said as he swallowed some of his food 'will that ever stop you from doing it though?'
Minho grinned, imitating Newt's British accent, 'you know me all too well, love'
Newt rolled his eyes and I smiled as I sat down next to Minho, in front of Newt, 'hi guys'.
Newt looked up and smiled 'Lexy'.
I always felt sort of awkward around Newt. We had this strange relationship where we could laugh and act like sarcastic shucks around each other, we could have deep conversations as well but at the same time there were these moments where it seemed like we had just met each other yesterday and holding a simple conversation seemed weird. I made it a sport to act like I didn't know why that was, while in the back of my mind I knew very well that the undeniable attraction I felt for him had always been the main problem.
'Oh, Alex, good to see you here,' Alby began, getting me out of my daze, 'I hope you didn't forget about the greenie arriving today?'
'No, of course not' I lied, 'why?'
'Well, I heard there wasn't that much to do at the med jacks today, but I wanted to make sure you stay on standby later, maybe come check out the greenie, see if they need any medical help', he responded, 'I'll have Jeff and Clint stay at the med jacks, I'll need you to report to them if anything's wrong and get the new shank to them if necessary'.
I nodded, inwardly sighing. This wasn't the first time I had done this, it was probably the 5th of the 6th already, but Alby always felt the need to repeat it to me, although the process was always the same. I couldn't blame him for it since he was the one in charge and I understood that he had to make sure it all went well, but from my perspective it seemed like he thought I was stupid and needed to get told something 11 times before understanding it. Therefore I didn't quite like Alby, but I did respect him as a leader.
'Oh come on Alby, I think she has it figured out by now', Minho said, and I wondered if he could read my mind. 'This isn't the first time she's done this'
Alby just shrugged 'it always good to be sure', he took another bite of his bread.
We had all just put back our plates as the alarm went off, indicating the arrival of the newbie.
Please let me know what you think!
