Ursa saw a face she thought she would never see again. Banished, making a living for herself she thought she would never run into either of her children ever again. As she gasped she realized it was the child who she had to be most careful around, Azula who had always been a Daddy's Girl even when. She hid herself in a crowd, hoping her daughter would not notice her.
"Why if it isn't my lovely mother," Azula said with a voice no one would believe the sincerity of.
Ursa looked down, hoping that if she ignored her daughter she'd go away thinking she wasn't herself. From the teenager's tone Ursa could tell that time hadn't made Azula good or gentle, that Ozai's obsession with power had probably only made her worse.
"I'm sure you've heard this already, but, your precious son messed up the wonderful opportunity you gave him," Azula said in a casual, mocking tone. "He made a fool of himself in front of the nation and lost father's trust years ago. He didn't appreciate what you did for him and probably never will. He's even in exile now. Just like you."
Ursa didn't look her daughter in the eyes, she had been right their time apart not doing the girl any favors. Maybe if she had stayed, maybe she could have been more of a good influence on the girl.
"Come on, mother dearest, would I lie to you about this?" Azula asked in a sweet and almost sincerely way. "You would think if he loved you so much he would have come searching for you after his banishment. But he didn't."
"Your father probably never told him the truth about what happen," Ursa said directly finally looking the teenager in the eyes. She knew Ozai and how he liked to do things fairly well.
Azula laughed malevolently.
"When you dream at night," Azula began, smiling confidently. "I bet you dream of father's karma catching up with him, of him having to pay for his wrongdoings. Zuko becoming Fire Lord. Iroh becoming his most trusted advisor. Zuko, then learning of your plight and rescuing you. The reunion with your son, how you would embrace each other and tell of how painful the separation was for each of you. I bet you dream of swearing with him that you would never abandon him again."
Ursa rolled her eyes. She could still see right through her lies. She knew exactly were Azula was going with her speech and was both annoyed and saddened how she was turning out.
"Do you want to know what will become of your beloved son?" Azula asked with a smirk. "I will hunt him, spoil his plans, and when I catch him I will serve on him a silver platter next to the Avatar. And when I do, father will make me his successor."
"Your sacrifice for him was a waste," Azula repeated.
Ursa grimaced, she knew Azula was wrong. She hoped one day her daughter would grow to understand. When she left, she saved her son's life, there was no other option. But she found herself wondering: if she had stayed, might she have been able to do better for Azula?
