Harry approached the park bench, scuffing his shoes in the mud. He still wore his tuxedo. The ice that had melted that morning was reforming, and the beginnings of solidity forming over puddles fell away as he put his feet down.

Hermione had wanted a proper church wedding, and Ron had eventually agreed. Harry knew that he should get back to the chapel up the road, outside which celebrations were taking place, but he couldn't bring himself to look at Hermione's smiling face.

She was happy with Ron.

Ron was happy with Hermione.

Ginny was happy with Neville.

Who needed him there?

He nearly collapsed onto the park bench, leaning forward and putting his head into his cold hands. Why was it so unfair?! He had loved Hermione! Ron had treated her like shit!

Life isn't fair, Harry.

Harry slammed his foot into the cold ground angrily. A grey pigeon fluttered in alarm nearby.

Harry looked up at the brightened chapel, just as the bells started to chime.

Once.

Twice.

Thrice.

Ringing, ringing, ringing.

Twelve times.

Cheers rose up in the chapel, and it took Harry a minute to realize why.

It was Christmas morning.

Huh. How ironic.

It started to snow.
