Walk of Life

Disclaimer: I don't own the Tenth Kingdom

Virginia and Wendell walked through the grassy fields of the palace. Wendell cleared his throat, "How are the children taking it?"

Virginia shrugged, "Gwen and Gina are taking it very well. Christine won't come out of her room and Anthony's disappeared somewhere into the Disenchanted Forest. But then again it's his cycle and he usually disappears into the forest during that time so we're hoping he doesn't go took crazy while he's there."

Wendell nodded his head, "I'm very sorry, Virginia."

Virginia nodded and tried to keep the tears down.

"Wolf was a special person." The king offered her.

Virginia sniffled, "Yeah he was." She wiped the tears from her eyes, "How are Diane and the kids?"

Wendell huffed, "Even during your pain your still worried about others." When she didn't answer he said, "She's fine. So are Walter and Whitney."

Virginia nodded, "That's good. Gwen can't wait to see Whit again."

"I can only imagine."

The two continued to walk in silence for a little bit. They both chewed over what to say. "Queen Riding Hood III insists on taking care of Wolf's funeral arrangements." Wendell said.

Virginia's head snapped up, "Queen Riding Hood? Why?"

Wendell's surprise at her question was clear, "What? He never told you?"

"Told me what?"

"Wolf is-was," he corrected himself, "The grandson of Red Riding Hood."

Virginia's eyes grew as wide as saucers, "What?"

Wendell nodded and the two stopped walking. "I can't believe you didn't know. Wolf's father Queen Riding Hood's son. He feel in love with a female wolf and the two married and lived in some hidden forest in the Second Kingdom."

Virginia was still completely stunned, "So he was the half-wolf grandson of Queen Riding Hood."

Wendell nodded, "I'm just so surprised that you didn't know. Though not many know the story of the Queen Riding Hood II's brother. Only a few here and there knew."

"How did you come to find out?" Virginia asked.

"When Queen Riding Hood III contacted me and told me she was arranging for her cousin's funeral. I'm just so surprised she would offer to do it. There is no love between the Riding Hoods and Wolves."

"Well apparently there was for Wolf's parents." Virginia said as the two began to walk again.

Wendell agreed. "Which makes your children the rightful heirs to the throne of the Third Kingdom."

"What?"

Wendell nodded, "Wolf's father, being older than his sister, was the rightful heir to throne. If your children saw fit to claim their place in the Royal Line, and Queen Riding Hood III having no children, Christine, being oldest of Wolf's offspring, would become Queen. That's why I was so surprised she would offer this help and openly acknowledge Wolf's lineage."

"Because she could lose the throne." Virginia finished.

Wendell sighed, "Are you going to allow her to take over his funeral arrangements?"

Virginia shrugged, "I don't know. What would Wolf want?"

"Honestly?" Wendell asked.

"Yes." Virginia replied, "What do you think he would want?"

"I think he'd want you to handle it."

Virginia nodded her agreement.

"We should probably get back to the palace before Diane sends out a search party." Wendell said.
